Smile What If: The Divine Nine + 1

I was doing some reading here and there and a random question popped into my head. I just wanted to know what others thought!

What would it be like if a group of women (or men!) decided to add on to the legacy of the Divine 9 NPHC fraternities/sororities? Each fraternity/sorority seemed to evolve at a crucial point in American history making great changes and differences that have made an impression not just African Americans but all America history.

With all that is going on NOW in America..I wonder what a new organization's goals and mission would be to help how America is now.

Hmmm...

I'm not a member of a GLO. Which is why I'm here to learn.

Oh ok. What are you here to learn? A founding purpose for the predominantly Black GLO that you want to found?

Oh no! Nothing like that lol. I'd like to learn pretty much all there is to know...

I'm rereading THE DIVINE NINE by Lawernce C. Ross, Jr. For the second time around and I just started wondering...

When I first read it Obama was no where near in office as President...there was no oil spill spreading all around...and 9/11 efforts where at an all time high. So yeah...I'm rereading.

What would the bolded have to do with the founding purposes of GLOs; and what would the founding of a new organization have to do with the Divine 9?

Here's something you can learn, there are BGLOs that are not in the NPHC. Being a BGLO, whether you were founded in 1950 or 2010, does not automatically grant you membership in the NPHC or mean that you will ever be offered membership.

As far as the bolded text goes I was it making a point of all the different historical things that have happened since the D9 formed..

For example:
(from what I read in the book)
Sigma Gamma Rho was founded in Indiana..a state heavily emphasizing on the KKK and of course that's a brave move.

Delta Sigma Theta promoted equal voting rights for black women and marched for the cause not BEHIND white women but BESIDE them.

Of course those type of issues aren't the same NOW. There is a war going on against terrorism and such..which is way different from Civil war back then.

I didn't mean for the question to come off as offensive or to start a debate I just wanted to see what others thought. And yes you have a point that doesn't mean they would be accepted into the NPHC.

The question could just as easily be directed to Mulitcultural orgs or IFC/NPC orgs too..I just suggested the NPHC (and BGLOs) because their doesn't seem to be as many in comparison to the IFC/NPC. By all means correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Aren't there some people still referring to "The Great Eight"? Shouldn't that get cleared up first? LOL

Yeah, I know I'm out of my lane, but 33cat and I just got home from the vet. The appointment was at 5:30.

That's the point! I wanted to know what OTHERS thought and what THEIR answer would be. You haven't proposed an answer to the question either. I'd like to know what you think since you have more knowledge than I do.

The Divine 9 is not an official title, anyway. What is official is that there are 9 organizations in the NPHC.

I already answered that question..no Im not. But must I be Greek just to wonder how a new BGLO targetting other things besides education, womens rights, etc. would be like in regards to how America is now?

If you don't want to contribute an opinion pertaining to the question you don't have to say anything.

New BGLO's pop up every day; however, many don't survive for years and they don't meet the long list of requirements for applying for membership in the NPHC. I don't think that any organization currently out there now does. Look at the 9 organizations and notice the similarities in their legacies and you'll have an idea of the requirements. The last organization to meet the requirements was Iota Phi Theta, which became a member in 1996. Will there be another in years to come? possibly but no time soon. First off such an organization would have to have a legacy comparable to that of the Divine 9 orgs.
