Sustainability
I have been chef at the house I'm at for 5 years and every year in some fashion or another issues come up about environmental sustainability, ie wanting to use less disposables, recycling, etc... This past school year there seemed to be a stronger than usual push to make some changes that, frankly, in the operation of a sorority house would impact operating budget. Another side of the issue also is that many times the well meaning solutions do not involve the actual members doing anything, but directives for us as staff to take on additional responsibilities and work so that the member can be "green". I do work for the house, but I have a contract with specific job duties negotiated with the House Corp. I feel that if the members want to be "green" and sustainable then they should have to put up some effort, too. In the end, after they have graduated and are out on their own, they will be "green" or not because they choose to be, not because of a committee vote.
That all being said, how do other chapters deal with the want to be more environmentally sustainable and what kind of things do those chapters do? Who manages the process, who sells it to the members, who enforces, who has the final say? I'd be iinterested in your input!!
