Lambda Chi Alpha Closes Ball State Chapter

Lambda Chi Alpha has closed its chapter at Ball State U. The article at

indicates that it was determined that the chapter could no longer meet Lambda Chi's expectations for college chapters.

Sad to see a chapter closing. The article points out that several other fraternities at Ball State have closed in recent years, for various reasons.

we all hate to see any chapter go by the way side!

I for one am going to contact LXA IHQ and ask why those of us who are working with IHQ and our Chapters do not know anything about this and hear about it on a Greek Chat Forum.

I am not upset that they were closed, IF it was truely warrented, but the Fact of where I first found out about it!

WOW, if it is coming down to drinking, I am sorry, for me, that is not a real reason to close a Chapter. As we all know, there are many schools who are working with the local campus police who will really come dopwn hard for this. There must be a bigger picture to this than what is printed in the Local Paper!

I for one want to know!!!

Holy Crap!!! You could knock me over with a feather! This means that the three chapters that neighbored our house are now standing empty (Delta Chi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Lambda Chi Alpha). Back in the 80s LXA and DX were two of the biggies at Ball State. LXA was a very well-to-do chapter too. They recently re-did their house too.
Sigh. I really wonder how much longer Greek Life is going to continue at Ball State. I'm sometimes amazed at how my chapter still keeps soldiering on when so many of the big boys have fallen. But I've always said we were the cockroach of the fraternities at Ball State!

Muncie -- A Ball State University fraternity with a history of sanctions has been closed.
National officials of Lambda Chi Alpha closed the Ball State chapter Tuesday, saying it didn't meet minimum standards.
The chapter's current members were evicted from the house, which was boarded up. Alternative housing has been arranged for the students.
Lynda Wiley, Ball State's student organizations and activities director, said declining membership and mismanagement of funds contributed to the decision to close the chapter.
Last spring, police raided the Lambda Chi house and arrested and ticketed 87 underage drinkers. Ball State had banned alcohol on the fraternity's grounds and at its social events.
Chris Sanders, the fraternity's social chairman last year, said recent university policies have put a damper on fraternities and sororities.
"I'm just not sure the Greek scene at Ball State will be around much longer," he said.
Four other Ball State fraternities have been closed since 2002. The university closed three -- Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Chi and Beta Theta Pi -- because they could not make mortgage payments on loans co-signed by Ball State. Theta Xi's national organization closed its local chapter after a hazing incident.

whoa..... i go to Ball State and you can imagine my surprise when I read this. This is the first time I have heard or seen anything about this.... and it is absolutely crazy! I obviously do not know about what really happened, but as an observer from the outside and someone in the Greek system I cannot imagine why they would have closed. Perhaps the financial stuff was true.... but I am not sure

Well I do know the chapter has change a heck of a lot from when I was at Ball State (I graduated in 1992)and during the five years I was advisor for my chapter I saw it slip quite a bit, but I never fathomed they would be shut down by their HQ! I guess its just really went downhill in the last few years. It really makes me worry about the fraternity system at BSU with so many chapter closing, and so many just do to the drop in #s and $.

It was a great time in the late 70s/early 80s on frat row at BSU. I was a Beta and after losing our house, I feel bad for the Chops. I had some good times at their house as well. But campuses across the country have pushed the social scenes (drinking) off campus which I must admit, probably needed to happen. Sadly, all that remains are the boring stories of glory days.

How sad the LXA is no longer on campus. I was back at BSU for busisness and I drove down Riverside and it was sooooo different. When I graduated in '81 LXA, Sigma Chi and the Beta's were great. Every girl waited to be asked to go to "Club Lambda" every fall.... so many good memories. It's sad the house isn't even there anymore.
The Lambda's were hot! They all drove sports cars and wore leather jackets (albeit it was the fashion then!!!) As mentioned earlier all thats left are the memories from a bunch of old grads!

Good for them. As a member of a dormant chapter, I know there's nothing sadder than to have your chapter closed. I only wish we could re-colonize. The LXAs were the hot fraternity on my campus too, back in the early '80s but they are no longer there either and I've never found out what happened.
