Dawson Creek connection?

One of our brothers send us this e-mail that is pretty funny. Not the fact that he watch Dawson Creek (that is a different thread) but the fact that, well read the e-mail:

Not sure if any one here actually watches this show but it was brought to my attention recently that one of the characters is joining a fraternity called Sigma Epsilon. I did some on-line research and found the following entry. It's from a Q & A page on the Dawson's Creek web site. I'm just wondering if there's any REAL connection between the fictional organization and our own.

Enjoy,
Name witheld

MARIE: Hey there Jason are you feeling like an empty nester now that Anna has gone on to bigger and better things? Anyway I can't help notice that the name of the frat (nee Fraternity) Jackers wants to join bears a striking resemblence to a real frat (Sigma Phi Epsilon). However the nickname for that particular fraternity is Sig Ep as opposed to Sigma Ep. Is this a done
on purpose?

JASON: Yet another clearance question, Marie. We were given specific instructions that we had to say "Sigma Ep" and not "Sig Ep" because the latter referred to a real fraternity. We actually had to replace a line of dialogue because one of the "day players" at the party kept saying "Sig Ep" and no one caught it until the editing room.

Dawson's Creek is filmed on my campus. Joey's school = Duke's campus. Woohoo

Wait one minute...

Dawson's Creek is flimed on the University of NC at Wilmington Campus. This campus is right on the coast, hence the water scenes...since they are supposed to be on an island, right? I don't watch the show so I'm not positive, but I'm pretty positive about the UNC-Wilmington thing. Wilmington is like the Hollywood of the East Coast. Empire Records was also filmed there as well as some other films.

Just some info...

Some of it is filmed at UNC-W. Jack & Jen's school, the "off-campus" things, etc. But. The scenes of Joey's school are filmed at Duke. All the neo-Gothic stone buildings are here. I saw the cameras. I've been in the buildings on the show. They've been doing extras calls and were filming here all summer, and still film over breaks. Trust me.

Yup, Miss Duke Blue is right--that is Duke where Joey goes to school! I know because my brother LOVES Katie Holmes and since he goes to Wake Forest, he was so excited he now only has to drive about 2 hours to catch a glimpse of her. BTW--Duke is soooooo pretty--makes me miss being in Carolina!

A side note

Meredith Monroe, played Andie, is an AXO from Millikin in Decatur Illinois.

I think it's funny that they film in NC to make it look like Cape Cod. I've not been watching it this semester, where did they all end up?

It's so funny that this is brought up. My best friend is a Sig Ep. I actually went to visit him this past weekend at his fraternity house and informed his chapter of Jack's rush of Sigma Ep. They all freaked out, but swore that it had no effect on their chapter because there was no Phi in the name. I was definitely scrutinizing those beer mugs with the letters on it in certain scenes. I would love to know if maybe a producer or writer is a Sig Ep alum. Anyone find any info yet?

I think they're all supposed to be in Boston.

Here's what I don't get (and I know that by saying this, I'm so busted and now you all know that I watch Dawson's Creek) -- have you seen Joey's huge dorm room with amazing windows? Geez, I never had a room that looked like *that*!

About the Sigma Ep thing -- I did notice it, first when one of the guys said "Sigma Ep" or "Sig Ep" and I was wondering whether they were actually using the name of a real fraternity. When they showed the outside of the house though, it just had the letters Sigma Epsilon on it. I thought they did a nice job of protraying the fraternity in a pretty positive light.

i find it interesting how the dean, chancellor, whoever decides they need to diversify and they need ONE gay guy.... just one? anyway, Jack is a cool guy, I would be friends with him, it's cool that the Sigma Epsilon men don't just want any gay guy, they want him - becuase really, he is like them except in the whole sexual preference thing. ok i'm rambling...

couple of things:
1) aren't jack, jen & joey all at the same school?? I'm pretty sure that they are..
2) they are all supposed to be at school in boston

3) last week one of the "sigma ep" brothers mentioned ATO, thought that was kinda funny..why is it that they have to make up fake fraternities to portray, but can mention real ones??

Joey is at an Ivy in Boston, something akin to Dartmouth, I think.

Jen and Jack are at a school that's supposed to be like Boston University.

The room they used as Joey's dorm room is actually a room in the library here. lol

Most of our dorm rooms do resemble that, though - the windows and wood and stuff. Just smaller.

Question

I noticed that, also, when I watched that episode of Dawson's. (my fave show!) But I'm really hoping that them inviting Jack doesn't turn out to be some sort of thing where they choose him so they can haze him for being gay or for any other reason in later episodes. As my Understanding Mass Media teacher says, "no one wants to watch a show that tells the truth" (for ex, that most fraternities/sororities condemn hazing). So I'm just a bit worried that they might show the fraternity on there doing Animal House-esque things that most non-Greek viewers want to see. As Valkyrie said, though, so far they have portrayed the "Sigma Eps" in a positive manner.

If you've ever read any of Anne Rivers Siddons' books she does this too. The groups that were central to the story, she made up names for, but the ones she just mentions in passing are real (Pi Phi comes to my mind). The reason for using fake ones is so the national doesn't get mad and sue, for whatever questionable thing the characters might do. Pi Phi on the other hand isn't going to care if she just mentions them and doesn't talk about anything any of them do.
