Elon Recruitment

Hi! I'm starting Elon in the fall and I'm so excited to go through recruitment next January! Can anyone tell me what recruitment is like at Elon because I feel like its different than most schools. Are recs necessary or not really? Is the dress more casual than most schools recruitment week? And finally how hard is it to get a bid? Thank you so much!

Welcome to GC! Recs aren't necessary at Elon, but if you have access to any alumnae, they don't hurt. The most important thing is to get to know sorority women before recruitment. You'll see them in classes, in your dorm, and in other organizations. Make sure you don't do anything stupid first semester because Elon is a small place and word travels quickly.

Recruitment takes place in the winter (it snowed this year!) but it can get hot in the houses. Most women will bring a big jacket and maybe Uggs if you're wearing strappy shoes for the wait outside. Your Recruitment Counselor will have more advice for what to wear specifically, as well as your recruitment booklet.

Placement is pretty good. You'll form opinions about each organization during your first semester, but be prepared to have your mind changed during recruitment. Organizations that I wrote off completely during first semester surprised me so much during recruitment week.

Good luck!

First thank you so much for replying! I'm so excited to go Greek (hopefully) next year! Your answers were really helpful! I saw pictures from bid night in the snow and it was so so pretty! As far as making mistakes first semester goes is it best just to lay low first semester and not go to parties at all or just keep your head on your shoulders when you go out?

When I think of "not doing anthing stupid," I think of keeping your head on your shoulders and being smart.

You don't want to be remembered as "that girl who got kicked out of XYZ fraternity, then puked on the street and started screaming obscenities."

or

"that girl who got drunk and flashed the entire party at ABC."

Don't do anything you don't want to be remembered by.

KSUViolet is right. It's great to go to the fraternity parties to meet people (both Greeks and non-Greeks, since Elon fraternity parties are a good mix). Just don't be the drunk one dancing on stage or sleeping with half of a fraternity. You can definitely have fun, but be responsible. If you look like a huge risk management liability, your chances of joining a sorority go WAY downhill.

I'm also an Elon Alum and congrats for going there! Its a great school with lots of opportunities!
Here is some other advice: Definetly get involved in other campus activities in the fall, there are tons of organizations - by doing that you'll be meeting greeks, it will also show that you have other interests.

Sorority sponsored campus wide Philanthropy events are becoming more popular and fun, not just having speakers come, (lots of trunk shows, buffet meals - like AXiD's A Xiti Dinner and Tri Delta's D-Hop, ZTA's breast cancer awareness, etc) you should attend those. You get to participate in the sororities philanthropy efforts, support a good cause and meet some of the greek women. Almost all the sororities support each other during their events, so you would get to meet a mix of the sorority women - not just the sorority who is hosting the event.

And like Xylochick said - definetly don't be "that girl", meaning don't go get all drunk, hook up with excessive amounts of guys (greek or not), or mouth off to a sorority woman in a stupor during the fall. People talk at Elon and most of the greeks are pretty friendly with each other and share information. Thats not saying don't go out or anything - you should! But don't be the girl that everyone on College ACB posts about!

Thanks to all of you! That's what I figured you would say, but I figured it was better safe than sorry! And trust me, I really don't EVER want to be "that girl" so it shouldn't be too much of a problem! You've all had really good advice and I just can't wait for Elon this fall! The only other thing I'm nervous about is hazing. I've heard from some people that some sororities haze and from others that none haze. Will that be easier to figure out once I'm on campus?

You'll hear wild rumors about certain groups, but they're just rumors. The big rumors going around in my day were that one group circled fat and another made you sleep with certain fraternity guys. Not true. No one I know was hazed, and my new member period was a lot of fun. I was spoiled rotten, the complete opposite of being hazed! The same goes for the other groups. Elon doesn't take hazing lightly and will make sure that it's not happening.
