Has your org. made you into its B****?

As a newbie in the greek world, I have watched people in various organizations in my community run themselves thin for their orgs. I have listened to people complain about how much they are being asked to do and how the doing is interfering with their families and their jobs. I have seen men forsake their relationships to be at fraternity meeting. To be at a meeting on Valentine's Day instead of being with your significant other? Come on now, are you for real. You know, I had heard of this, but I did not think that grown men and women would have their priorities this screwed up. Anything for your organization, right? At some point you have to say no.

What are your thoughts?

Valentine's Day as celebrated in the US is a bullshit Hallmark holiday. What it actually marks is the day St. Valentine was BEATEN TO DEATH, STONED AND BEHEADED.

It's fairly obvious to me that this lady (or one of her friends) was left on Valentine's Day for a fraternity meeting. Which doesn't jibe with me, because had Valentine's Day been on a Monday or Tuesday, would she have expected her man not to go to work?

Bitter lady is stupid. Panties in a bunch. Non-issue.

Because you used something as lame as V-Day, I will venture to say that I would value a man who honors and embraces his commitments - and being a member means attending meetings (which are usually scheduled). If a meeting came up and he broke plans that you had made, I guess my reaction would depend on the reason (and in the Greek world, there are some things that can happen within the chapter that must be dealt with on an "emergency" basis - like Risk Management issues).

Everything within moderation, of course (there are reasonable reasons to miss a meeting - sudden illness, injury, etc.), but to go to a meeting on V-Day is not a deal breaker. (Channeling Liz Lemon).

These meetings should have been planned in advance, so it's not like a S/O would just up and run to a fraternity meeting.

I think being a part of an organization requires sacrifice. I don't get every holiday off at work. Same holds true for my GLO.

And this is completely off topic, but I went to Ellison. Always interesting to see Central Texas folks on here

Don't make this stupid "org made you its bitch" speech around your alumnae chapter Sorors. The tone and wording are horrible. It reeks of new member/someone who knows very little jargon.

I don't know about your alumnae chapter but mine is filled with dedicated and devoted Sorors of a wide range of years on Earth and in the Sisterhood. They devote their time where and how they want to do so. Some devote a lot more time than others because they CAN.

Chapters that plan meetings on Vday clearly had enough members who were available on Vday with no qualms. What these members do before or after the meeting is none of the chapter's business. Do you know what this guy did before or after this frat meeting, and whether this frat meeting messed up any plans (if he had any--not everyone cares about Vday) he had on Vday?

Oh for crying out loud.

Lots of orgs hold chapter meetings on Sunday evenings. These meetings are scheduled well in advance. So if Valentine's Day is a Sunday and your S.O. has chapter (or another obligation for his/her org) that night, you make other plans to celebrate. Go to dinner the night before. Go to Sunday brunch. Go out to dinner before or after the meeting. This is not rocket science.
