Sigh. I'm still recovering from the GL cancellation and now this?

As much as I love Y&R and have come to love Days again, I have to agree. Soaps have no allies at networks anymore.

Do you think the ABC soaps are/will be saved by Soapnet?

I don't think so. I think Soapnet has enough money to pay the licensing fees for rebroadcast, but probably not the enormous expense of producing a show.

Considering SoapNet is running garbage reality shows and crap movies, doubtful.

Ugh, ain't it the truth. Although I do like "Being Erica" and I'm looking forward to the second season.
It's just that I never hear any rumblings about ABC discontinuing soaps and I wonder if it's somehow because of all the cross-promotion on Soapnet. I think Y&R is still leading in the ratings (and it, too, is on Soapnet) but I don't think the ABC soaps are doing too shabbily? I could be wrong, though - been a while since I picked up Soap Opera Digest.

I think the problem with soaps is that some of the storylines are the following:
1) so far fetched that they are just hard to believe (i.e. Marlena being pocessed by the devil)
2) they drag on forever and ever and ever and ever (i.e. Abby being Victors kid. It only took like 4 years, literally, for it to come out. Even though everyone else knew)
I'm sorry I rarely watch soaps anymore, but I could easily turn on General Hopsital, One Life to Live, Days of Our Lives or All My Children and know exactly what is going on. How pathetic is that?
Unless soaps change their attitudes when it comes to storylines, I agree with OTW that they will go the way of the dinosaur within the next 10 years.

My mom watches Y&R religiously. Anytime I'm at my parent's house for any length of time, I get sucked into soaps.
The funny thing about all soaps is that I can NOT watch it for like 8 months, and the next time I watch, I STILL know what's going on. That's how much they drag out the storylines.

Eh, I don't know. The far-fetchedness has always been part of their . . . charm.
I think their main problems are (1) more women working, so they're not at home during the day and (2) more competition from cable.
