10th Anniversary - A&M Bonfire collapse

It's the 10th anniversary of the Texas A & M Bonfire collapse.

http://www.texasmonthly.com/preview/2009-11-01/feature

I spent the day of the collapse at the private Christian high school at which I taught, trying to get word of our alumni who were on the bonfire that night. 12 Aggies were killed, bonfire as a campus recognized event was over, dozens were injured, and we had another example of a tradition that turned into a liability nightmare.

I'm thinking of the families, and all the Aggies who are remembering the victims. May light perpetual shine upon them.

Wow. I can't believe that it has been 10 years already. I was living in Dallas, and woke up that morning at 5:30 to hear the news on the radio. Very, very tragic. I remember that one of the victims was from Arlington, so that made a lot of our local news.

Thinking of all the families, friends, classmates, and survivors.

Has it really been a decade?

That's so crazy. My older sister was going to school there at the time. I went up to visit her during the bonfire prior to the one that fell and it was the most awesome event ever. It was really cool to see everyone come together like that.

I remember I couldn't go the year that it fell. Her boyfriend at the time was supposed to have a shift that night but he traded with someone because he had a last-minute study group for a test. The guy he traded shifts with didn't get hurt, but it was still heartbreaking to hear about those that weren't as lucky.

Does anyone remember how at the football game after that, the Texas band marched out on the field and played the War Hymn? Who'd have ever dreamed it? I sat in the living room and cried and cried and my husband and kids didn't get it, being in Georgia.

OH YEs - I sobbed. And then they played "Amazing Grace". That was an awful - yet awesome - game. Texas was nothing but class that day.
