A dog eat dog recruitment story
Ok so not really but I am using dog breeds as a code for the sororities lol.
So ive been reading quite a few of these and decided I wanted to post mine, I was a little reluctant as Its pretty obvious what my chapter is. LOL. but i decided it would be ok as its coded and most people post hteir affiliation at the end so u just wont know my code until the end lol.
There are seven NPC sororities at my school.
Poodles
Pomeranian
Beagle
AKita
maltese
yorkie
Grey Hound
Ok so I go to a school of about 20000 but only about 6% of the campus is Greek, so recruitment isn't horribly competitive. ( If u know where I go thats fine, It really shouldn't be that hard to figure out...but please pm and ask )
Ok so my recruitment starts in the summer, with a very very very very informal meet n greet.
During this day some girls were invited to campus to meet some of the sorority girls. We were splitt into groups of about 10 and lead around by the Gamma Chis and taken to all the houses and had about 12 minutes in each house. The sorority women(the whole chapter wasnt even present so it was very very informal) just talked to you and asked very general information and most had a posterboard of sisters pictures and philanthropy pics. also before recruitment started I attended a fashion show to show us what to wear during recruitment, it was just Gamma chis and pnms.
I don't honestly remember everything from every house from this event since it was in June but I'll post what I do remember.(not in order attended as i dont remeber)
Poodles: I knew one of the girls from high school, not personally but a little bit. We talked and she showed us some of her philanthropy. I remember being pretty nervous and feeling a little awkward
Pomeranian: walked in and felt great. I realized i knew a few of the girls as their pictures were on the board. This honestly felt like it could of been my home and recruitment hadnt even started.
Beagle: by far my favorite house this day!!! the conversation I had felt so natural and I felt very welcome that day. if I would of had to pick one them it would of been them.
Akita: I knew one of my friends was one but honestly remeber very little from this house from that day.
maltese: I loved their colors and they seemed very diverse and i could tell their sisterhood was close.
Yorkie: i knew of one of the girls from high school and i remeber thinking how shed changed. dont remebre much else
Grey hound: all i remeber is their house was pretty cool, it was set up differntly in the floor lay out (all the houses at my school are the same as they r owned by the university) and they had lots of pictures up
Well i really wanted to go Greek and had always thought I would during high school, but my parents weren't very big on the idea and kept telling me I was not making a smart choice. So I signed up for recruitment but actually didn't pay (making my decision final) until like 4 days before recrutment started. I neede outfis and honestly just kinda went in with the whatever happens will hopefully happen for th best and I wouldn't have to tell my parents I didn't get a bid (what they said may happen as we had a family friend not get a bid about 2 years ago). So my friend and I went on a shopping trip the tuesday before recruitment (recruitment started wednesday) so literally the day before lol. We found 2 dresses ( one for skit night and one for pref) I already had a dress for the first night and shorts were for the other 2. So i now had outfits to wear .
ok I hate to run now but im being rushed out the door lol. so ill update later

ok so here is day one of recruitment. You attend every house for about a half hour. But I had band practice this day so I actually missed my first two houses , I missed my second house (Poodles) literally by a 15 seconds... I was actually just gettign to the sorority house at the one minute mark but htey didnt think id have time to get caught up on everything before we went in. So I was only going to see 5 this night, even though I originally thought i had only missed one house and I was actually going to get to back it up after my gamma chi group had finished since we were the first ones done but this ended up not being the case.
beagle: this was my first house fr the night, I was being briefed on recruitment procedures (clapping, sitting, etc) the 5 minutes before we walked into the house. so we walk in and the conversation who is talking to me was a little akward and I felt like I was caring most of the conversation with the first gorl i talked to, but the second was very genuine and overall I left feeling that it wasn't my favorite and a little weird but i really did like them this summer (as they were probably my favorite). So I thought I wanted to go back.
Akita: the conversation here was much much better and I loved it. They seemed much more genuine than my first house and I didnt feel as out of place here. You could tell all the girls were really close and I knew I wanted to come back.
Maltese: I walked in and was immediately comfortable. we talked a little about philanthropy and about the table they had. (they were gorgeous with lots of pictures) i could immediately tell their sister hood was very close and they were a great group of girls. This was probably my favorite house of the night.
Yorkie: This was by far my least favorite house of the night. I talked to 7 girls in like 30 minutes at this house. I felt very very overwhelmed here and although the girls wer all very sweet I just didnt think I d really fit in here. I didnt think Id come back tomorrow.
Grey hound: by far the most relaxed conversation I had that night. It was very "non recruitment talk." im not joking we talked about flamingos and rubber ducks. It was a very nice way to end recruitment for the night. I knew I could easily be myself here and could of seen myself here. I wanted to come back tomorrow.
So when we were finished, I got my card to fill out and was told I wasnt going to get to go see the two houses I missed (poodles and pomeranians). However If I put either of those houses down, it would not count against me and I would get to see them tomorrow if they were on my top 5 (even though there was no way they could ask me back). I hated that I wasnt going to get to see 2 of the 7 houses and definately knew I wanted to keep one of them from how much I had loved them in the summer (the pomeranians), but could not decide whether to keep the house I had felt ok in and had actually seen and loved so much in the summer(beagles) or to get the oppurtunity to see the poodles the next night. so after much debate I ranked
maltese-1
akita-1
pomeranian-1
grey hound-1
beagle-1
poodles-2
yorkie-3
nad walked back to my dorm with my friend who was also going through recruitment. We stayed up talking like half the night about everything under the sun. Even though we both had early classes, we were both so excited for recruitment and with so many nerves built up we were not getting much if any sleep at all that week. and the little sleep I did get was honestly not that great. By the end of this first night I was so so so so so glad I had decided to go through recruitment.

Ok sorry ive been gone for like forever but its exam week here....
ok well the second day of recruitment you can go to up to 5 houses. Its philanthropy day, u do a craft that goes to benefit the philanthropy. I meet with my gamma chi group and we were called out into the hall to get our schedule for the night. They were in alphabetical order, I was in the middle, and super nervous! Finally after about 5 girls I was called out in to the hall.
My night consisted of 4 houses...I was a little dissappointed with only having four but they were 4 of my favorites so I quickly got over, as I was quickly reminded that I was not alone in not having a "full" load and there were other girls who didnt even have my four. This also made me wish I had put the poodles as a number 1 because I would have been garanteed to see them.( ALthough I know this sounds dumb, because had i put poodles as 1...I would have released the beagles not the grey hounds,, but with nerves and stress I, and I think lots of other girls, always play the "what if" game.)
They were
pomeranian
akita
maltese
beagle
I was a little shocked I didnt get back asked back to grey hound as I rele felt a connection the first night and it was by far the least "recruitment like" conversation, but i tried not to let it get me down too much.
At pomeranian I was greeted by the president, who I had gone to high school with, and the girls in that house seemed so nice. I immediately felt the warmth I had felt in the summer there. I loved it and I was very glad I had choose to see them again. There project was a door hanger type thing, the only down fall I felt so intrigued in the project I felt like it was difficult to talk and do the craft at the same time. But every girl I talked to was super sweet and so easy to talk too. I felt a bit like I was playing catch up since I hadnt seen them the day before.
The next house was akita...again I felt extremely welcomed and like i could call this place home. There craft was decorating a stuffed animal with a necklace and clothing. It was much easier to talk and do their project than it was at pomeranian. The first girl I talked to, I had actually talked to the night before...We talked very easily as well as I did with every other girl I talked to that night.
Maltese: By far had the cutest costumes of the night and they were my favorite colors (always a plus!) we made boo boo bunnies that night, and although a very cute project it didnt take 2 minutes and the first girl that was talking to me really was not the easiest to talk to and we didnt have much in common and it seemed like forever before a "bumper" arrived. The conversation then got better, but this had me doubting a little how well id fit in here.
My last house beagle: Better conversation than the night before. We made flash cards with shiny stickers for their project. They were practical and cute but again took like 30 seconds. However, this meant more time to talk...the conversation went great. Until the girl I was talking to went to go show the movie about their philanthropy, leaving me sitting there alone . I thought this was a little odd, and very awkward but it was ok after she returned.
This night you were suppose to narrow down to 4. Therefor I rated all of mine 1, in no order, and was happy I didnt have to drop anyone because I wouldn't of had a clue. ALthough I was a little less sure of maltese I still loved them, and it was only one girl who I had a felt a little weird with, and as they were my favorite the previous night I was no where near ready to release them.

OK now for day three:
Same thing as before you meet with your Gamma Chi in a room and get ur schedule. I had three house (once again one less than the possible 4 yu could have)
pomeranian
akita
beagle
So no more maltese but I honestly kind of saw that one coming and I still had my favorite two houses so, I wasnt as stunned or upset to have one house than allowed tonight.
Pomeranian~ had a very darling skit! I loved it. I truly could see myself fitting in here as every sister I talked to here seemed so genuine and sweet, I rele enjoyed my time in this house.I laughed so hard this night as well as even teared up a little bit. My only complaint was that it did not use every sister in the skit. I remember I didnt want to leave here when the knock on the door came, I felt like I could just sit in this house all night and I d be perfectly content. ANd as I was leaving I told a few sisters I could truly see myself here (as I would not have this oppurtunity on pref night...I was not going to be there because I was in band and we had a football game to be at :/)
AKita~ The girl who talked to me actually was a friend from highschool, so the conversation was a little more than the tipical recrutment stuff. They also had a lovely skit and it incorporated every sister. Their skit made me life so hard and want to be a part of their very close sisterhood. I felt a bond with several of their sister and this was another house I did not want to leave. I also told a few of the sisters I felt as though I belonged here (again due to missing pref.)
beagle~The conversation here was again a little off, we talked about their symbol and how easy it was to find on things and how everyone had them. It was ok but where the convo ended up, im not so sure it was the best thing to be talking about but hey its all cool. Their skit was good, it used every sister and was concentrated on their philanthropy and symbols. I felt good here as well but I wasn't sure I wanted to call it home. The knock came on this door, and I left without throwing in the "I could really see myself here."
That night we had to cut down to 2~ my decision that night was a little easier than I was expecting, but I felt that I still was a little pulled to change. We were suppose to limit down to 2, ranking 1,1,2.
1~pomeranian
1~akita
2~beagle
SInce I was not attending pref, I was told to expect a call from the pan exec pres tomorrow night. I was also told it maybe beneficial for me to write letters to the chapters Icould possibly be attending the next night. Since there was no way for me to know which houses Id get asked back to, I could write to all 3 chapters even though only two letters would be needed. I decided to write to all 3 chapters about how I'd love to be their sister.
Needless to say this was a very long and extremely nerve racking night. Im not sure what I would do if it hadnt been for my friend who was also going through recruitment.

I thought you HAD to attend pref in order to receive a bid.....Does this vary from school to school???

Well here goes my "pref night."
Well I facebooked my letters to our pan exec member to give to all the chapters. Yes i know facebook? but that is how we were pretty much exclusively contacted from exec and by the time I knew who to write to, recruitment for the night was over. I assume they were only delivered to the 2 chapters that did invite me back for pref, as this was suppose to "take my place" of attending pref; but honestly I never brought it up so I actually dont kow who all recieved my letters. Well I was in band so I had to play the piccolo for about 4 hours that day, I had been debating which house I was going to put first. I knew it was either pomeranian or akita ahead of beagle...but if I got offered to pomeranian and akita, I was so not sure which one I wanted more. I had flip flopped back and fourth all day, and I really hated to be missing pref as I was making my decision after only seeing akita three days and I had only seen pomeranian twice. I recieved a call late that Saturday night...well actually it was early Sunday morning (about 1 am). I was so excited to be recieving the call, but I was half a sleep and it took me a minute to realize who it was. The pan exec president was on the other line and she told me I had been invited back to pomeranian and akita. SHe asked me which one I wanted to rank as number one. Before I knew what was coming out of my mouth I said Pomeranian. She asked me if I was sure, I told her I was (even though I was not sure if I was lol). I then was so excited I could no longer sleep. So I rode back on the bus for another 3 hours have asleep and have awake until we got back to campus, and very excitedly texting my friends to inform her of my night and to here about hers. Once back onto campus I went to my dorm and decided to go to bed before my very busy day later on.

I'm going to say it does; however I am definately not the expert on this matter. I recieved a bid (and it wasnt a snap bid) after not attending pref. I also know of a few other girls who recieved bids from other chapters than my own, who also were at the football game (they r cheerleaders or on pom squad) as well as a sister who recieved a bid after being at the game (shes in color gaurd). I know the game was considered a "class " event fot those of us in band because marching band is a class that gives a grade and counts for credit. As for the cheerleaders I believe it is just a sport, not a class. Also it may of been different because there were lots of us, and it was a school event. I also informed exec, as I would assume everyone else did, before I signed up for recruitment to double check it would not hurt my chance of recieving a bid (consiquently I did not fully sign up for recruitment until like 2 days before rush actually started). I also have a sister who missed pref night and bid day because she was in a bicycle race. This was for charity not class, and she also recieved a bid. So of the 6 people I know who missed pref night all did recieve a bid (to 3 different chapters of the 7 on campus). PLease note these r the only ones I know of and there very well could be girls who missed pref that did not recieve a bid.
I do have a friend who had gone through rush the year before and the same thing happened with a football game so she had to miss pref night. She did not recieve a bid, and she believes that her not attending pref caused her not to get a bid. (again this is what she said).
Besides from her I have another friend who did not sign up to go through recruitment because she was told that not attending pref ruined ur chances of getting a bid. (Obviously this was not the case, and I do not know who actually told her this.)
Sorry to be so lengthy and I hope this at least makes a little sense.

SO On bid day, I went to the auditorium where we were to recieve our bids. We all went in and amongst the nerves we still managed to chit chat and enjoy the company of the other girls we were there with, although it seemed like the longest wait ever. We then found out which chapters all of our gamm chis were members of (my group guessed both of ours correctly) . Bids were then handed out and we had to "sit" on them unitl eveyone had recieved theirs. They then allowed a row at a time to open them. The picked rows at random so my row went roughly fourth. I was so annoyed I was not allowed to rip open my bid hte moment it was handed to me. WHen I finally was able to get I found out I was a POMERANIAN aka ADPI!!! I was super excited and then went to meet with the gamma chis who were also ADPIs as well as my pledge class. We then do a "running of the girls" although we all pretty muched walked. Lined up outside of the house and were "presented" to the chapter and welcomed home.
