Post A book you'd like to read...

What's up Ladies of AKA!

I recently read a book entitled "Sorority Sisters" by Tajauna "TJ" Butler, whom I think is an AKA. It's a really good book, and I am certain that the sorority TJ is depicting is AKA. Please check out her novel to support her as a black author, and definitely as your soror (if she is indeed an AKA). It is good reading for all women in the NPHC family, so even if she's not your soror, you'll appreciate the story she tells about sisterhood and pledging the black sorority.

Happy Reading!

Yes,
Tajuana Butler, the author of "Sorority Sisters" is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She attended the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
I purchased the book "Sorority Sisters" one Friday. I began and finished reading the book that Saturday. The book was great & easy to folllow.
I hope you have better luck in purchasing the book than I. It took Barnes & Nobles 3 months to get the hardback book in stock, but it was worth the wait.

I thought Ms. Butler used a great deal of tact in approaching the topic of black sorority life. Notice how she didn't illustrate the pledging activities, but instead, focused primarily on the relationship of the pledges? I thought that was an intelligent move on her part. No negative reflections on AKA at all. And, she never mentioned any other BGLO. However, I must say that there were a few references to Omega Psi Phi-- was I the only one who caught that? Recognizing that authors write from their own personal experiences, I couldn't help but assume that Tajuana doesn't think too highly of my Coleman brothas. Still, the book was excellent, and I finished it two days.

The next book on your reading list should be "The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities" by Lawrence C. Ross.

Many Blessings!

We had a discussion about this book a couple of months ago. I hate to say it, but I still haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I'm going to have to hit Books-A-Million or Barnes and Noble this weekend for sure. I'm pleased that everyone likes it.

my book club is reading sorority sisters now. it is good insight into the relationship/stress that pledges go thru in their pursuit of their sorority.

Hi Sorors and SF's,
Sorority Sisters had to be one of the best books that I've read in a while. I couldn't put it down. I even got a "D" on a test because I was reading the book instead of studying. Shame on me. Anyway, I just wanted to share with anyone who is having trouble finding it that you can check in a Wal-Mart store if there's one near you. I was in there the other night and they have it there for $13.00. HAPPY READING!

Thanks Soror! That's good to know, because I went to various book stores and I couldn't find it! That good 'ole Wal-Mart! It has everything! That's where I found Benilde Little's "The Itch" isn't that supposed to become a movie? It's a good book, too!

I bought the book from Wal-Mart, it was $14.97 w/o tax; however, it was VERY GOOD! It takes you back down memory lane. It's a good gift for someone who has just crossed.

Phew...I spent all night reading "Sorority Sisters". It is a great read. The411, I also liked that fact that Ms. Butler focused on the relationship between the line sisters as opposed to focusing on pledging per se. Also, I have to admit that I LOVED the big sisters. Especially, Big Sister Attitude Adjuster....she brought back memories.

My phone bill is going to be screaming this month. I just HAD to call my LS's after reading the book. I was feeling all mushy....

"Sorority Sisters" is face-paced and easy to understand. I can't say it any better than that!

I must agree..."Sorority Sisters" is a great book. I also read the book in a few days. I was told about it, went and bought it Friday, starting reading it that night and by Saturday I was done. It felt like I went through the entire process all over again.

GREAT BOOK, TJ...Two Pinkies up!

I loved Sorority Sisters...it will truly take you back

I also read Sister Secrets by Breggie James. This book is not nearly as good as Sorority Sisters.

Sister Secrets has to many characters: 2 different Sororities (each sorority has both members and pledgees), there was also a couple of fraternities and each frat had their members and pledgees. Then all of the girls had family members or boyfriends. Then the book went back and talked about the charter members of the sororities. This book is way too confusing there must be over 20 characters in this book.

If you read this book you should get a pen and paper and start writing the characters down so you won't get too confused....this book even has a sequel...I don't even want to attempt reading it because I HATED the ENDING...but judge for yourself.

Ok. I know I'm late and bringing up an old thread, but I finally began reading "Sorority Sisters" Saturday morning while sitting in the hair salon. I'm almost finished and yes, it brought back memories!

AKAtude..

i read "Sorority Sisters" and i must say i finished it in 5 hours. i kid you not.

The book was the absolute greatest. The Pink Plush Rush. The girls stuck together through the whole book and even thought it refered to Alpha Kappa Alpha (we know it), it remind me of my Aspiring sisters during my process.

i look forward to her next book in the future!!
