My Winter Recruitment Story in 2010
Seeing people's recruitment story made me want to share mine, so here it is!
There are 4 sororities at our school, I'll be naming them after my favourite tv shows:
1]One Tree Hill
2]Pretty Little Liars
3]Nip/Tuck
4]Weeds
At my school, we rush in the winter, around the second or third week of January. Growing up I knew that I wanted to be in a sorority because I wanted to have a group of sisters that would support me in academics and what ever else I did and vice versa. I ended up getting myself into something that had so much to offer me and I don't regret joining the sorority that I did.
But anyways!
My friend, lets call her Ridley, and I knew that we wanted to rush. On another hand, our other friend, lets call her Marie, was on the fence about rushing. She was concerned that she wouldn't be able to afford it and that it wasn't for her. In the end, Ridley and I told Marie to just come along and if she didn't want to rush after the first day, she could drop out.
Day 1:
On our first day of rushing, all of the girls that were rushing were split into small groups of maybe 10 or 12 girls. Coincidentally enough, Ridley, Marie and I ended up in the same group! This meant that we would all visit the same houses on the same day! Now, I was excited to be with them, but at the same time I wish we would have all been in separate groups because I felt that our thoughts would bias us in choosing one house to be in. However, this wasn't the case at all! (thank god!)
After being sorted into our groups, my group went to visit our first house which was Weeds. This sorority didn't have a house yet but they did have a room in a building where they held their initiations and chapter meetings. The fact that they didn't have a house bothered me a bit but it was a bit understandable because they were the newest sorority on campus. The thing that really impressed me was that the theme of their party was monte carlo! They had tables with card games, faux cocktails and a quick video about their organization. I never really got to connect with a single girl from the sorority but they were all really nice and bounced me from person to person based on my interests. Like, if I mentioned that I played golf, they would say, "Oh! Andrea played golf when she was little and almost played for this school! Let me introduce her to you!" Although it was a very nice gesture, this happened ALOT at the party. I wished I had gotten to know a couple of girls more than knowing everyone a little bit. Because I felt like I got to know everyone, but not on a deep level, I didn't really feel a connection to this sorority.
After leaving from Weeds, we went to the Pretty Little Liars house. At this point I was a bit discouraged and started to think that maybe greek life wasn't for me...that maybe this wasn't meant to be. When we walked into the PLL house, we were greeted by the loudest welcome song and it just lifted my spirits up! All of the girls were cheerful and I felt comfortable in this house since I knew two girls who were in this sorority because they were a part of the golf team and Ridley, Marie and I played golf in the fall with these girls. However, instead of talking to the girls we knew, they insisted we talk to their sisters and we did! I ended up talking to three or four girls for the rest of the time we were there. However, I didn't feel a connection with these girls either. I mean, they were great girls, but the last conversation I had with a girl, she just went on and on and on about a professor and how she couldn't stand her. This didn't really sit well with me. I didn't like the professor either, but I didn't talk negatively about her to someone I didn't know and trust.
After leaving the PLL house, we all went back to where our evening began with our Rho Chi's and then after checking out we all left and went on with our evenings. Ridley, Marie and I met up at a lobby and talked about our evenings and promised to not peer pressure one and another about preferring a house over another. I told Ridley and Marie that I didn't really feel a connection with either sororities, but if I had to choose, I felt as if I was more willing to give Weeds another go. To my surprise, they both were head over heels with PLL. I have to admit, I was a bit jealous that they might be sisters and I might not even be a part of greek life. I went to sleep that night ready to not continue to rush.
Day 2:
As cliche as it sounds, I was looking forward to day 2 because this meant that we would be visiting a sorority that I wanted to be in more than any of the other sororities. The first house we visited was Nip/Tuck. I fell in love with this sorority after walking into their house. Their house was brand new and it had their animal and their symbols all over the house. I was looking forward to going to this sorority because a girl that I had met at work, before going to college, went to the same college that I was attending and was a founder of the chapter! A girl I knew from a school club was a Nip/Tuck and so was a girl from the golf team. The girl that I knew from the club took me under her wing and introduced me to her sisters and led me to a room in her house with other sisters and PNM's. In that room we played a quick version of bingo that allowed us all to get to know each other. Before I knew it, we were all saying our good-byes and being rushed out the door to go to the next house. I had a good feeling about Nip/Tuck and at the moment, it was my favorite sorority by far!
Last but not least was One Tree Hill. As soon as I walked into this house, I felt an immediate sense of comfort and warmth...then again we did wait 10 minutes outside in the middle of winter so that might have been part of their plan! They too welcomed us with a welcome song and led us to their basement, where they held their mixer. A girl that I had in a class was a One Tree Hill and I was excited to see her there since I got along with her very well in class! She introduced me to some of her sisters and her big who I easily got along with. I felt very comfortable with these girls and I could see myself being a part of their sisterhood. After talking to some girls, we were split up in smaller groups and played group games. Although I can't remember what exactly we played, I remember having laugh and a great time! And once again, before I knew it, we had to leave. Truth be told, I didn't want to leave and I was hoping that I would be able to return to their house for round 2.
This time when we met with our Rho Chi's, we had to chose our top three preferred sororities to go back and visit. This is how I listed them:
1] Nip/Tuck
2] One Tree Hill
3] Weeds
4] Pretty Little Liars
After turning in our cards, we left and once again Ridley, Marie and I got together to talk about what we thought about One Tree Hill and Nip/Tuck. They both didn't prefer one or they other, they were still in love with PLL. I told them how much I really liked both One Tree Hill and Nip/Tuck! All we had to do was wait and see what sororities we got invited back to.
Day 3:
After waiting all day to see what houses I got incited back to, we finally found out and I immediately went from feeling great to wanting to cry. I was relieved to see that Pretty Little Liars hadn't invited me back but neither did Nip/Tuck. I thought I had connected well with the Nip/Tuck girls and I didn't know if I wanted to continue to go through recruitment. However, I remembered how much fun I had with the girls of One Tree Hill and that I should give Weeds the benefit of the doubt. So while holding back tears, I went visit Weeds. This time instead of a monte carlo theme, we were making bracelets for some kids for Weeds' main philanthropy. While we all made bracelets, I got to talk to more girls and realized that I had a better connection with these girls than I did at the first party. I even had a girl say, "I really like you! You're so cool!" As weird as it sounds, it was a confidence boost that I was grateful for. Maybe this night wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! I started to see myself as their sisters and I was glad they had invited me back.
Once we left Weeds, we headed to the Rho Chi room and I grouped up with the girls that were going to One Tree Hill. Once in the One Tree Hill house, I felt the same that I felt the day before. I felt comfortable in the house and still got along with the girls in this sorority. Since this night was the philanthropy night, we got to know more about their philanthropy and got to participate in an event that One Tree Hill does annually for their philanthropy. Although I usually would never volunteer to do anything in front of a large group of people, I felt comfortable enough to do this and in the end I had so much fun! I had put myself out there and was supported by the people around me, it was such a great feeling! (I would say what the activity was, but I feel as if it would give the sorority away! :S)
After visiting both sororities, we all went back to the Rho Chi room and chose our top two sororities (some girls got to visit three houses). We had write down the sororities in the order that we preferred the most and I did so:
1] One Tree Hill
2] Weeds
Once again Ridley, Marie and I got together again and I just couldn't hold it in any longer...I started to cry. I told them how much I wanted to be invited back to Nip/Tuck but I wasn't. I felt bad saying that because they both got invited back to Nip/Tuck and I didn't want to rain on their parade before going to the sororities. They comforted me and told me that I didn't miss out on much anyways and we talked about our experienced over hot chocolate which Ridley bought for all of us. I was so glad that they were there for me when I needed them and vice versa. These girls could always turn a negative into a positive and I loved them for it! Ridley and Marie were still in love with Pretty Little Liars and were pretty dead set on accepting a bid from PLL if they got one.
Pref Party:
Today was the day that we would see what pref parties we were invited to and by the end of them we would have to chose which sororities we would accept bids from. To my surprise, I had been invited to One Tree Hill's pref party but not Weeds'. I didn't feel as discouraged not getting invited back to Weeds' pref party as I did when I didn't get invited back to Nip/Tuck's second party. I got ready to go to One Tree Hill's and was excited to see what they had done for their party. Instead of having it at their house, they had their party in a historic and beautiful room on campus. All of the girls were in black pin dress and they were all mingling with us. Right in the middle of the party, the girl that was in the same class as me came up to me and read me a letter that she had written for me for the party. Since we had french class together, she wrote it in french which I loved because it made it personal. After she finished she hugged me and I asked if I could keep the letter but then she reminded me that I couldn't take anything from the room. I completely forgot and wished that I could keep the letter. ): After everyone had their letter read to them, the senior girls went to the front of the room and one of them read something they wrote about how One Tree Hill had transformed them and how they hoped that whatever sorority we chose, we would also have the same experience. 14 girls read their letters and I couldn't help but to be touched by their experiences and I began to cry. I thought it was strange that I was crying and I thought that these girls would for sure think I was a weird-o for crying even though I didn't know these girls. Before I knew it the Rho Chi's arrived and announced that it was time to leave. I hugged the girl from my class one last time and left the party hoping that I would get a bid from One Tree Hill. However, if I didn't, it wouldn't be the end of the world and I could always rush next year or just support Ridley and Marie and not be a part of greek life.
While all of the other girls had to choose between what sorority to choose to put as their first, second and third choice, I wrote One Tree Hill as my first choice and then Weeds as my second. I thought that even though I wasn't invited to their pref party, I was told that I should put down two choices just to be on the safe side, and so I did. As soon as I walked out of the Rho Chi room, I regretted my choice and wanted to go back and take back putting down Weeds. Now all I had to do was wait and hope that I didn't get a phone call telling me that I didn't receive a bid.
The entire day went by without a call. Ridley, Marie and I all went to dinner that night and kept our cell phones on the table as if we were expecting a Rho Chi to call and deliver us the bad news. Dinner came and went and we didn't receive a call. When 6.30pm came, we looked at each other and sighed in relief! We all received bids!! Now we just had to wait until 7pm to see which sorority we got a bid from!
As we walked to the Rho Chi room, we tried to figure out which sorority we got a bid from and just when we thought it was all going smoothly, a Rho Chi stopped us at the door and said she needed to talk to Marie. Ridley and I walked into the Rho Chi room and sat down and waited for Marie. When we saw her walk into the room, Ridley and I knew what was going on. Marie didn't get a bid and didn't get a phone call. Although Rho Chi's tried calling her...the call never went through. Ridley and I broke into tears as we hugged Marie but strangely enough Marie didn't appear sad at all! Marie guaranteed us that she was fine and that it wasn't meant to be. Ridley and I promised that we would hang out with her after bid day activities were through and she told us not to worry about her, to bond with our new sisters. And with that said, Marie walked out of the room and went to her dorm.
Ridley and I were sad to that Marie wasn't experiencing this moment with us, but at the same time we were excited to see who our bids were from. I was more nervous than excited because although I really wanted a bid from One Tree Hill I could also receive a bid from Weeds. Once every PNM was in the room, we all were instructed to open our bid cards and almost immediately the entire room broke into screams and cries!! I looked around and began to open my card. When I opened it I saw that I received a bid from...
ONE TREE HILL!!!!!!
I smiled and let out a small squeal of joy!! I got up from my seat and joined my new sisters!! Once we were all in a group, we left the Rho Chi room and walked to the One Tree Hill house while our sisters sang pledge songs to us.
Now it's summer and I am an initiated member of Pi Beta Phi!!!!!!! (: I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out! I love my sisters and I love the experiences that I've had with Pi Phi! I have three more years of memories to make with these girls! And I can't wait for recruitment to come so that I can give PNM the same experience I had when rushing and coming to the Pi Phi house!
Thanks for reading! I know that I don't word everything as well as other girls on here, but I hope you enjoyed it! <3
PPL and all of mine!

I'm surprised Weeds was allowed to have "mocktails." Where did your friends end up pledging? Congrats to you and Pi Phi!

Oh dear. My thoughts as well; I considered asking her about her statement in that thread, given her post here. Where'd she go? Off to fix a mocktail?

Did a quick check on sister search...she seems to check out. Maybe just a bit flighty? Or initially didn't want to admit she preffed one?

I vaguely remember one of the sororities having mocktails during my recruitment, though I can't for the life of me remember exactly :/ And it was only a year ago! Maybe it was just a Shirley Temple or a light, tropical punch or something. I DO remember one of them serving lemon water on ice water night, which was very refreshing!

During informal, my chapter serves mocktails like Shirley Temples, sparkling cider, and other fruity non-alcoholic drinks and some fancy desserts. It always goes over quite well.
