lilms_edelweiss' formal recruitment story 2009

Hi everyone,
I have been "lurking" on GreekChat for months now and recently created an account and mentioned in another thread that I was planning to go through recruitment in the fall. Now that I've been through recruitment I'd like to share my story!

Background details:
I attend a university where recruitment isn't as brutal as colleges, say, in the deep south. I am a senior who is sticking around for a little while longer and I decided to go through recruitment becauseI felt it would be a great experience and I know that if I didn't do it now I would probably never have a better chance at it again. The reason why I hadn't gone through recruitment in the past is because I just transferred in the previous year as a junior. I realize that my year in school is a huge disadvantage but I am hoping that I can show the sororities on campus that I can be a dedicated sister!

The code names I am giving to the sororities on campus are female singers who have popular songs on the radio (as of now):
Miley Cyrus
Taylor Swift
Katy Perry
Lady Gaga
Jordin Sparks
Beyonce
Keri Hilson
Shakira
Kelly Clarkson

Hope you enjoy!

*sorry for posting in the wrong section*
Day 1: Meet and Greet
The first day of recruitment was the longest. We were all going to spend 20 minutes at the sorority houses. Before doing that, however, we had to sit and listen to a lecture about recruitment and how it works. Everyone was so nervous but at the same time anxious to leave and visit all the sororities. We were introduced to all the sororities and their president. They quickly left, we were split up into our Pi Chi groups, and soon we were on our way to meeting all the sororities!

My Pi Chi group first visited Miley Cyrus. We all stood outside while we could hear chanting and singing inside the house? I looked around at other girls’ faces and some PNMs looked confused! We were all thinking, “What is going on in there?” Then the sisters of Miley Cyrus marched out in a line and lined up in the yard. They continued singing and were all smiles. Miley Cyrus sure did seem welcoming! One by one a Miley Cyrus sisters paired with us as we walked in the house. We sat down in a big living room which filled up very quickly and became very loud with all of the women talking. I tried to have a good conversation with the woman I was paired with but at most times it was hard to hear her. I thought my experience there was nice; I was even more anxious to see the other houses!

Next we visited Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift had a HUGE house! All the girls had identical letter shirts and they were really cute. I also liked the song they sang. The girl I was paired with was very sweet. As we were talking we walked around the house a bit so I thought that was nice. We were able to get away if a large crowd was starting to form so it was easy to hear our conversations the whole time. I had a good feeling about Taylor Swift and I felt that I would loved to become one of them!

Next on the list was Katy Perry. This sorority has a gorgeous house on campus and it is also in a convenient, close location to campus. The women in here were very nice but I felt like I didn’t fit in. I would love to be a part of their sorority but I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed if I wasn’t asked back.

After Katy Perry my Pi Chi group visited Lady Gaga. Their house is adorable and they had beautiful landscaping! I thought that their song was really cute too. I was paired with a sister who happened to have the same major as I did so that made a good conversation starter. The women at Lady Gaga seemed very down to earth and I could definitely see myself as one of them.

On our next visit we went to Jordin Sparks. They have a very lovely house. When I stood outside with my Pi Chi group, I was stunned at these women; it seemed like they walked outside in perfect unison and they had perfect matching outfits. At Jordin Sparks I was double-rushed by a sister. I tried to have a decent conversation with her but it seemed like I was trying to compete with the other PNM. I loved Jordin Spark’s philanthropy and color scheme and symbols, but I wasn’t sure if I’d get asked back.

Day 1 Part 2
Next we were off to Beyonce. I also loved Beyonce’s house and all the girls stood outside with Lilly Pulitzer dresses; all different styles and color schemes. I was paired with a great Beyonce sister and I felt like we had a conversation that really flowed. I liked their color scheme and mascot and I thought they had a really cute pin. I felt good at Beyonce and was really hoping I would get to come back the next day!

After Beyonce we were off to visit Keri Hilson. Keri Hilson is a well known chapter at my university where many of their sisters are highly involved in other organizations. Keri Hilson had a small house but it was very cute. The women of Keri Hilson sang us a song and then led us into the house. I was paired with a very sweet Keri Hilson but we got off topic and before we knew it the party was over! I realized that I hadn’t really learned a thing about Keri Hilson’s chapter at the university. I left this house with sort of mixed feelings.

Nearing the end of the day, our next visit was to Shakira. I had heard many negative things about Shakira’s reputation on campus but I let those rumors slide because I had a classmate last year who was a Shakira and she was sweet and intelligent. Shakira seemed to be well put together and in this house I was also double-rushed. The sister I was talking to was very laid back but again I found myself competing with a PNM during the conversation. I guess I was just too shy but I didn’t want to come off as rude! I left this house with mixed feelings as well; I felt like I probably wasn’t going to be asked back.

The last (but not least) house was Kelly Clarkson. When we arrived at Kelly Clarkson everyone gasped! They definitely had the prettiest house on campus! We walked up the sidewalk and into the house where we were paired with a sister. We did a quick tour of the bottom floor of the house and then sat down to chit chat. I had a great conversation with Kelly Clarkson and was hoping to return the next day!

At the end of the day it was time to drop/save. We were to pick 7 sororities that we would want to return to and drop 2 that we didn't want to go back to (and rank those two).

My picks to keep were:
Taylor Swift
Katy Perry
Lady Gaga
Jordin Sparks
Beyonce
Shakira
Kelly Clarkson

and I decided to drop:
1. Miley Cyrus
2. Keri Hilson

I felt that out of all the sororities, those two were the ones I had the least connection with.

So after such a long day we were all so exhausted! I went to bed early that night so that I could wake up early again the next day and be ready for round 2! I was so nervous that night; I was hoping that I wouldn’t be cut from everyone. I definitely had the worst case scenario on my mind!
So did I go back to any houses the next day? Stay tuned to find out!

I love Katy Perry and Lady Gaga but who is Keri Wilson? I don't think I've ever heard of her before...

Keri Hilson. She has a song out right now called "Knock you Down" with Kanye and Ne-Yo. She's more of a Hip-hop style singer.

Sorry, fixed the original post. I hadn't realized that I left out when I had transferred in.
To clarify: this is currently my third semester at this college. I came here in Fall 2008. I had a classmate who is a Shakira in Spring 2009.
