Rushing as a student coming from overseas
My college room mate and friend since 5th grade daughter has decided to go through rush at TCU in August. She decided this on Sunday. Anyway I am now email friends to write her recs. This a rushed process. I have fixed her resume and she has a pic. Needless to say she has lived overseas most of her life. In reviewing my daughters resume she said on wow I don't have much of that. I told her not everyone has lived in 8 countries or went on Spring Break in Bali. She is totally open to ANY sorority as she really knows nothing except the pictures she has seen on my daughter FB and it looks like something she would like and fun. I think it would be great as she knows no other people at the school and she could make friends fast. Do you think it matters if her pictures aren't the right way etc. Resume not as long?? They got back in the states 2 weeks ago. Thanks.

Random question:
For alot of the bigger Texas APH's, isn't July a little late in the game?
I have heard that the later you wait, the more difficult it is for them to help you (because of the sometimes large amount of "last minute PNMs.")

It depends on where in Texas. My APH is still accepting girls. As long as the girls are prompt and send in their stuff (which most of the girls haven't...at least not for my sorority) then it shouldn't be that big a deal.

She registered with school and I am having people send it directly to the chapters since she is not registered with any City. A couple of people of told me they called it was not too late and they think she'll be ok. We will see as she truly knows no one in a sorority at he college. Freinds of my room mate daughters who are in sorority at other schools are really trying to help. We'll keep you posted.

As a grad of TCU I would say just have friends send them directly to the chapters. I know that my chapter was receiving recs right up until the first rush group came through the doors. Please note: recs are a *must* at this school.
With virtually 1/2 of TCU women being active in sororities and even more than that participating in recruitment I would agree that this is an excellent idea for the daughter of your friend. TCU has tons of out of state students that rush, so this would be a great opportunity to meet other new freshmen even if she decides not to pledge.
(I do hope she pledges... I am very proud of the greek system there and have wonderful memories of friendships both in and out of my chapter. There are 11 excellent NPC chapters at TCU)
All that travel and oversees living are great to include on the resume. Yay for easy topics of conversations!
Please keep up posted!
ETA: While we did accept recs up until the last possible minute, I can not stress enough that I do not recommend that route for your friend! This would be especially true since she doesn't know anyone in the chapters yet. I would say to get them there ASAP, but at minimum no later than 10 days prior to the start of recruitment.
Also.. since, as you likely know, things in Texas are done a little differently than the rest of the world (um, overdone perhaps???) , be sure that she really studies the pictures for recommeded dress for each round, and then notch it up a bit. A friend of mine from CO noted that 1st round was causal so she wore verrrrrry casual shorts and a t-shirt! The rest of us were in causal-but-cute skirts with dressy tees. She may also want to ask some of the girls (from Texas) in the dorms what they will be wearing each round and dress in a similar manner. It was always easy to pick out the Texas girls during rush!

It helps that my daughter is in a sorority and I am sure will be helping her with wardrobe. She has sent her pics of others friends at TCU and what they wore during rush. Needless to say she is a triplet and her sister is going through rush at SMU but that's not til Jan. I have highlighted her travel and school on her resume. Not many people can say they met and worked with Jane Godall.

With the held of the -ETA House (Zeta & Theta's the live together) we have managed to put together a resume and send it to nearly all soroities. I think most recruitment chairs will have eveything my next week. The ETA's are contacting thier friends in chapters there so I really think everything is going great. Now we are moving onto the clothes. When my daughter went through rush it took us about 6 weeks to get all this done. It is faster the second time around. Now on to her sister that has deferred rush at SMU. I will keep you posted with what happens in Aug.

Here's an update as TCU Rush started Monday. She went to all 11 houses on the first day. Of course and she had to cut 3. She told me that she really liked everybody an ended up cutting the last 3 parties she went to. In retospect she said she was tired and really glad she got one of them back on the second day.
Today was skit day and she could have gone to 5 parties but only got asked back to 4 and that was ok. She really likes all the soroities and would be happy being in any of them but there is one she really likes. I told her keep an open mind tomorrow when she goes to three parties and then to be sure she puts down as many soroities as she has spaces for.
I will say that even though my daughter soroity cut her on the first day what she did by sending email to all her friends in all soroities at TCU and telling them good things about her was probably the biggest help. I think she will get into a soroity. I will let you know. Thanks to all the people who helped with info it has been most helpful.

Why are these things “needless to say”? When something is “needless to say” it would not need to be said (needless = without need). Since these things are not obvious, they are not “needless to say”. Geesh. What’s with the grammatically challenged on this site?

I can just imagine how cool it would be to have a sorority sister with the kind of background this girl has! I hope she finds a great group to join!
