Kindle Books

Has anyone used Amazon.com's Kindle books? I keep reading about them, and thinking that having one for my mother would be great, but I don't know anyone with hands on experience. If the positive experiences vastly outweigh the negative ones, I may actually have time to myself!

One of the questions I have is the font size - how large can it go? If someone can let me know that, it would be half the battle.

Another would be whether or not books bought could be stored & re-read. She'll read the same book five times or more if she likes it.

And of course, are there any other good or bad features of which I should be aware? I really appreciate your thoughts or experiences!

I do not own one, but I do know that you can store books on it and re-read them.

My hubby just downloaded the app for his iPhone and is planning to look for any free books that are out there just to test it out. When he lets me know how it goes, I will let you know.

That's my plan as as well. If they could do color on this technology and highlighting/notation, I think the Kindle could very well replace campus bookstores and textbooks. Too late for me, but wouldn't that be nice?

I have the Sony eReader. I used to travel quite a bit for work, so it definitely came in handy. I also like using 'ebooks' because they cost a little bit less, they don't take up room in my apartment, and they aren't heavy to move. (And it helps the environment )

I also like that I can take my reader wherever I go & I use it to store MP3 and pictures too.

I know it has the capability to put PDFs & MS Word documents on it too, but I haven't tried doing that yet

I think the new model that just came out has the highlight/note capability, but I haven't tried that one yet. I have the PRS-505.

I have a kindle! I *love* it. The font size can go pretty darn large. I keep it on the smallest size, which is about the size of a typical book, and I think it goes up 5-6 levels from that to be huge. You can store and reread books.
I have an original Kindle, and one of the main complaints was that it is too hard to avoid accidentally hitting a button to change the page, but they addressed that in the Kindle 2 and made it easier.
It is very easy to use, and it is so much lighter than carrying a couple books around!

PS - I reread books over and over again if I like them too!

Thanks, everyone, for the information. When I told my mother what I was looking into, she almost cried with happiness. She used to read all of the time - we've gotten her a lot of "bells and whistles", but having something that she can read in bed would almost be miraculous at this point.

Does anyone know if they can be returned if the kindle book doesn't work out? When I leave messages, I use a 26-30 point font.

Keep any information coming!

From amazon:

Returning Kindle

You can return your Kindle for a full refund within 30 days of the day you received it as long as it is in new condition and returned with all the original packaging, manuals, and accessories. Your Kindle is not eligible for return and refund after the 30-day return period has expired.

(found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200144510 )

The first day I got my Kindle, I had a bit of buyer's remorse and thought I'd never use it, but I really do, every day .

My mom is considering one, if she gets it I'll be happy to ask questions about it for you. My mom is in her 60s so she may be looking at some of the same features you are for your mother.

I really really would like a Kindle, but am still not sure if I want to drop the $299 on it. I just downloaded the app for my iphone kinda as a test run. Should I make the investment? Anything you hate? Love? Convince me, please.

I use my Kindle for iPhone all the time. I've read several books on my phone and love the fact that I don't have to run to the bookstore to get a book when I get the urge to read! I wouldn't buy a Kindle because that's just one more thing to lug around. What would be the point?

This thing looks really cool (the video on Amazon really sold me), but I don't think the nerd in me could ever give up the way the pages in a book smell. Wow, that sound's even stranger now that I've typed it.

Gusteau, I agree with you...I won't ever completely give up books! I can't take my iPhone and soak in my whirlpool tub while enjoying a good read! I can't read on my iPhone or Kindle while taking off or landing at on a plane. It is good in a pinch, but I like real books if I can get my hands on them!

Hello fellow nerd.

I'll admit it, the Kindle has absolutely no appeal to me -- I have no desire to read a book on a screen.

As I said in another thread recently, this = me:

That comic is excellent MysticCat!

I'm the guy who carts tons of books across 5 states every year knowing full well that I will never have the time to read them and they will simply add to the general clutter of my desk. It will be a sad day if these things replace books.
