Remembering an Alpha Sigma Tau sister

Hi ladies -

I'm hoping you might be able to give me some guidance. I'm not an Alpha Sigma Tau, but a woman I knew who was part of your sisterhood passed away today. She was a very special friend to many of us, most of whom (myself included) never met her IRL but only knew her online. All of us were women who battled infertility and underwent IVF treatments - we met on a support board at ParentsPlace.com (later iVillage). Our friendships go back more than a decade at this point.

Alpha Sigma Tau was a very important part of our friend's life, and we would like to remember her by doing something to support your organization in some way. I know that you support two philanthropies (Habitat for Humanity and Pine Mountain Settlement School) - would it be appropriate to make a donation to one or both of those causes in her memory? Another thought I had was perhaps setting up some sort of scholarship in her name. Who might I contact at Alpha Sigma Tau headquarters to discuss doing something like this?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

dukemama,

Thank you so much for thinking of a sister! How special your friendship must be to know of how important AST was to her. I'm guessing you are talking about Gina (unless another AST passed that I'm not aware of).

Call our HQ at 205.978.2179 (it's a Birmingham number) and ask for Melinda Oates. Talk to her about what you are wanting to do and she will definitely point you in the right direction.

I've also sent you a PM with some more information.

PsychTau

Yes, you are correct - it was Gina. Did you ever have the opportunity to meet her in person? Almost every summer it seemed she would post about she and her family going to Hershey Park and/or Dutch Wonderland (which are both only about 1.5 hours west of where I live) and I always mentioned to her that we should meet up out there. I wish we'd had that chance.

Thank you so much for the information you provided, and I'll be sure to pass it on to my "cyber-sisters".

My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family. It's never easy to hear that you've lost a sister, even when you don't know her personally.

As PsychTau said, call HQ and I'm sure they will be more than willing to help answer your questions.

And thank you for being generous enough to not only think of your friend, but also of Alpha Sigma Tau, and all that the sorority does to help those in need, during this difficult time.
