Formals

I thought I knew what Formals were for Greek Life, but I guess I was wrong. I know it's something like prom, but are formals meant for the end of the year to have a party for those who are leaving? Seniors and such?

My chapter gave out our "fun" awards at formal and we gave our seniors their senior gifts at that time as well.

We have a sepaprate event to really recognize seniors called Senior Wills that took place before formal.

Every chapter does things differently though.

Ours was always near the end of school, but that was because we have a BUSY spring quarter sorority wise (Greek Week, Greek Awards, a number of large scale philanthropy projects, etc). It was more like a prom, with dates/music and stuff and some small tribute to the Seniors (usually a special song for them). We have a specific event called Senior Recognition where the Seniors are given gifts from the chapter, and the seniors hand down their shirts and other paraphernalia. We also do paper plate awards during this event for the whole chapter (I got "Oversees Correspondent to the Leprechauns", "Best Irish Accent by a Non-Irish Citizen" and "TD's best "Row" Chi"). Senior rec usually occurs right before Alum initiation.

We recognized seniors in a separate event because they didn't always all go to formal. Not only that, there may be special "sister only" moments you want to share that you don't necessarily want your dates to hear.
