Question about Greek life at Washington and Lee

I was looking through irishpipes' amazing thread (many thanks to her for doing that) and was surprised to see that the Washington and Lee NPC chapters are relatively young (established in 1989 or later), especially for a southern school with such a huge Greek presence (I believe around 70-75% of the students are Greek). Was this a case of locals affiliating with NPC orgs at college request/demand, independent decisions of locals to go NPC, or something else?

Undergrad programs at W&L were essentially all male until the mid 1980s.

When the campus chose to add sororities in 1989, it was an open colonization (not locals being absorbed). As you can imagine, it was a very competitive process. Three groups were chosen: Kappa Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega and Kappa Alpha Theta.

Wow, I had no idea that W&L went co-ed so recently!

I believe W&L admitted the first women in the Fall of 1985. One of my HS classmates was one of the first women to attend W&L.
