SIGMA GAMMA RHO - elite?

Hello:
Can anyone who is in the BGLO circle tell me if Sigma Gamma Rho is considered elite? Now, before we get to stereotyping, I wanna say that I've heard some people say that in the past few years these ladies have grown even more, and they're coming with their "A" game. I don't wanna know if they're fat, darkskinned, etc. Because I've seen some of those types in ALL black sororities, and on the flip, I've seen some fair-skinned, long haired women in SGRho (their current International Grand Basileus, as an example). Anyway, what I notice most though, is that even though these women host cotillians, debutante balls, exclusive parties, some are doctors, lawyers, educators, and politicians, it seems (at least on the surface), that they are not afforded the title of being "elite". I know many who are very wealthy, but have never been extended membership to the Links, Inc. or Jack and Jill. I also know some who are "rough around the edges"...all of ya'll have them lurking in your orgs. So what's the deal?

I personally am not Greek, and I think it's pretty preposterious that these orgs were designed to be inclusive to the black community, but even within the orgs themselves there seems to be so much division. Could someone on the "inside" educate me? I'm not asking for codes, and handshakes, I'm seeking a perspective on this. I don't like making assumptions, but these SGRhos are doing it big, and it seems some folks are not giving them their due credit. I even had one woman tell me that she had no clue what a ZETA (no disrespect) was, and that she'd only heard of the three top sororities, SGRHo, DST, and AKA, however, it seems to me like SGRhos are forming their own elite circles, hosting their own elite events, and being left out of others events.

I'm thoroughly impressed by all the orgs, and more so SGRho, founded on a mostly white campus, just two doors down from the clan! You'd think these women would be getting some serious respect. Sometimes black folks confuse the hell out of me.

PS...I'm not Greek, nor do I intend on being Greek. Just tell me....where are the SGRhos in The Girlfriends, Inc., Jack and Jill, The Links, Inc., etc.

And to the SGRhos..I respect your legacy. But I didnt really ask this to hear something akin to "All of my Sorors are ELITE, our history is ELITE, we are a strong force, etc." I really want to know...are you in any of the aformentioned circles, and if so, are you the minority, and if not, why do you think that's the case?

Thanks for your reply, but I've spoken with these women already. I just wanted the other side, since I know there are two (sometimes three) side to each story. Some of them say they don't feel excluded, while one sister I know, an OBGYN with a dermatologist husband says she does feel at times that she's only afforded inclusion because her husband pledged Alpha Phi Aplha. She thinks if it were not for that, her being an SGRho, regardless of her stellar career and credentials, would be enough for her to be excluded from such groups like Jack and Jill, etc.

But see...that's only one opinion. Because I know other accomplished SGRhos who say what the OBGYN says is a flat out lie. They all live in the same general vicinity.

So, I'm just seeking other thoughts, that's all.

I don't think your question is appropriate.

But see, that's another matter of opinion. In all honesty, judging from your profile, your a student living in DC, and unless you are in a BGLO, or have some insight into all of this, you are not really equipped to answer this question for me.

It's not a thing of disrespect. It's a fair a relevant question. As a non-Greek, I hear so much about BGLO unity, but when questions arise, people can't get defensive. Rep your orgs! Talk about how strong, diverse and inclusive they are, to ALL BGLOs. Unless there is truly something shifty going on, I don't see how my question is out of line.

Would it be out of line if I were an AKA? A Delta? An SGRHO asking?

I'm an outside party looking in, but I am also curious as to why there seems to be fewer SGRhos in this group. I'm merley seeking a professional, and insightful opinion on this.

Thanks all

Let me start by saying that I am confused by your post. However, I will bite with food for thought.

First, to answer your initial question, all D9 orgs. are "elite." Point blank. Where have you conducted your "research" to suggest that people feel otherwise? On your college campus? Within your town? During isolated discussion with friends? If your scope of research is limited, your conclusions will be limited as well.

Second, what number represents the "many" members of Sigma Gamma Rho that you know who have "never been" extended membership into the Links, Inc. or Jack & Jill? Again, if your scope is limited, your conclusions will be as well. Wealth, profession, and other issues do not GUARANTEE you membership into any of the stated orgs. There is a process/procedure, as with all things. If we are going to single out Sigma Gamma Rho members, let's state for the record that I know "many" Alpha Kappa Alpha members that are wealthy, highly educated, professionally employed, etc., that have never been extended membership into the Links, Inc. nor Jack & Jill. So, is that to state that they are not "elite?"

Third, who are these "people" that you speak of that are holding Sigma Gamma Rho back? And what "events" are Sigma Gamma Rho members being "left out" of?

My main question is what considerable research have you done to suggest that there is a systematic attempt to exclude Sigma Gamma Rho from the Black Greek "inner circle?" If Sigma Gamma Rho is out, then who's IN?

So...you're an Alpha. Therefore, for whatever reason, you wish not to answer this question. That's fair enough...for you. But that does not mean no one else would be willing to. I wonder why you feel my question is so out of line?
