Transfer Junior @ Mizzou. Should I rush?!

I am FINALLY transfering to the school i have always wanted to go too, Mizzou!
But i will be a junior and i have heard many great things about Greek life at MU and when i went to a date party this past year at one of the fraternities up there i met some girls that were in houses and told me about how important sisterhood is to them and think that i could benefit from being in a sorority.

My problem is i am considering rushing but have heard that grades are really important, i dont know if a 3.0 GPA in college will cut it :/ and i was also told that because i am a junior my chances of making it are slim to none unless i am an outstanding student academically.
Also i heard at Mizzou that a rec letter(More than 1) is a must especially if your GPA isn't that great. I'm not sure if i know any alumni to get recs from : /

With that being said, i was hoping some of you could tell me what my chances are of even making it past round 1 and if its worth it. I know that if i get in a house the sisterhood and the philanthropy experiences will be with me for a life time.

Either way i am SOO excited to be a tiger!

You will not get a bid unless you register for recruitment and attend the parties. No one here is going to place odds on you getting a bid. It is something you alone will have to decide if you want to do and at the same time can be prepared if things go badly.

Mizzou is competitive with recs and grades being very improtant. It is possible for junior transfers to receive bids but you will have to stand out amongst underclassmen with 4.0s and active community service records. Look at KC or St. Louis Alumnae Panhels for support on the recs.

I think you should rush. I am a TKE at Missouri State University, but have met the recruitment chair for the TKE chapter at Mizzou, I would be more than happy to hook you guys up if you're interested, send me a PM

How does your being a Teke at another school help the OP get into a sorority?

Missouri State and Mizzou are night and day as far as females rushing is concerned. Sweet offer from you, but I don't think you're going to be able to really do anything for her.

33girl is correct—State and Mizzou are very different in terms of the scale of rush. Also, unless this chick thinks being in a fraternity would benefit her more (not judging) I don't think the TKE recruitment chair is going to be of much assistance. Because he's a boy.

No one's brought it up, but I'll just get it out there—Mizzou hasn't had a junior quota or "free" juniors (meaning extending a bid to a junior, or a certain number of juniors, didn't count towards the number of girls on your regular bid list) for the past couple years. And while some on this board will tell you to mention something like "I'll be doing a grad program so I can still be collegiate member for 4 years," don't. I don't know if that's even the case with you, but at Mizzou it would be kind of weird for a girl to stay active as a 5th/6th year.

Now that said, a handful of juniors accept bids every year. They are all-around BA's, with good GPAs and usually know girls in the house. BUT not always. You may as well try. Get your recs in order—start networking, contact your area's Panhellenic Alumnae association, etc. Many houses will have a GPA cut off of ~3.5 for transfers/nonfreshman though, so be prepared for that.

Also (and I would recommend NOT posting your answer to this, but just considering it thoroughly) are you transferring from a community college or another four year school? You're probably going to be asked (by houses seriously considering you, anyway) why you didn't rush at your old school, why you transferred, why you went to a community college first, etc.

Good luck! PM me or post if you have any other questions.
