There's already an entire thread dedicated to Southern Miss I think. I suggest reading it:

Southern Miss is not is not Ole Miss, but is still kind of competitive. Recs are suggested and while sophs can get bids, they may face heavier cuts than freshmen would.

my mom wasnt in a sorority and I only know maybe one woman who I could ask for one. is there any other way to get rec letters? I've seen some posts about them on this site but im not sure of what the correct etiquette is in asking for them or how all that works. Wouldnt the person writing the rec need to actually know me?

You could contact your local Alumnae Panhellenic about securing recs. Yes, it's nice for your rec writers to know you personally, but they don't have to.

Many Alumnae Panhellenics, especially in the south, have teas during the spring/summer to meet the young women who will be attending schools in the fall and need recommendations. I would contact the local Panhellenic as soon as possible to have your name put on the invitation list.

Are you in MS? I believe there is a pretty good Panhellenic chapter in Jackson, MS... http://www.jacksonpanhellenic.com/index.html
I am sure you can contact them and they can help you find some alumnae to help you with recs...

Last year was the first year for USM to use an upperclasswoman quota...most groups were able to pledge at least 3 additional sophs and juniors (I do not think any seniors went through recruitment). It seemed to work really well.
