The Original Animal House

I read The Original Animal House by Chris Miller (the main author of the Animal House Screenplay) an absolute scream, if the AD's antics had taken place today the house would be closed forever and I do mean forever its much worse/ funnier than the movie, I literally booted when I read the book. Best part, hell night- the seven fires- hypothermia, booting, threats of sodomy you name these guys did it, Winter Carnival and Green Key weekend's just a great book.

Tom,
I think he is talking about an article that appeared in Esquire several years ago that was written by one of the screenwriters for the film. The movie was derived from this guys experiences and further developed by several other contributers.

G41965,
Is that the article you were talking about? I read it some time back and it was pretty obvious that it was the inspiration for the movie. Where did you find it?

I think he's talking about this book: The Real Animal House, by Chris Miller (movie's screenwriter). It came out a few months ago.

REPLY TO TOM

Tom,my wife saw the book at the bookstore and got it for me knowing I would like it , it's new-2006. Chris Miller the author of the book ,cowrote the screenplay for the movie with Harold Ramis. Chris Miller was an Alpha Delta Phi at Dartmouth 1959-1963, most of Animal House is based on his time at Dartmouth, this book might be considered the uncensored version of the movie, not exactly the same- more graphic, funnier more personal. Miller was the basis for Pinto in the movie Animal house . Harold Ramis was a ZBT at Washington U in St.Louis and contributed to and rewrote the screenplay.

This has been explained many times.

But it is still not the the movie was really about was it?

Second guessing is hindsight.

Co-screenwriter Chris Miller based the National Lampoon short stories that gave rise to the film on his experiences in a fraternity at Dartmouth, from which he graduated in 1962:

"I was at Dartmouth in the early sixties and I belonged to the outlaw fraternity on campus at that time (Alpha Delta Phi). I always said that one day I was going to write the story of that experience. So, around 1974 or so, I started writing it as a novel and then the novel got cut up into chunks, which became short stories that ran in the Lampoon. The stories were documentary. They were cinema verite. When the script was written, the actual incidents that the two stories were about were the fraternity initiation that I underwent (The Night of the Seven Fires) and the experience I called Pinto's First Lay.

http://www.nationallampoon.com/flash...house/ah1.html

"I was Pinto in my fraternity. That was my name. In the movie, I think that Pinto is me as a pledge and Boon is me as a senior. All the other guys are guys that are so archetypal that everybody knows them. Everybody had friends like those other guys.

"I think the parts of the movie that were most true to my life were the road trip and what goes on during the road trip. In fact, the guy who was the original guy who tried to get a date with the dead girl was at the premiere. When the incident came on, he stood up and raised his hands in the air just like Rocky."

Now living in Venice, California, Miller said at the film's 25th Anniversary Reunion that he's writing a prequel to the movie. "We can't exactly do a sequel with the death of John Belushi," he said.

By chance, would any of the antics written about have taken place at 321 Columbia Terrace?

The Night Of The Seven Fires
by Chris Miller
That is indeed it. "Animal House" started as Chris Miller's short story, "The Night of the Seven Fires," in the National Lampoon, although some of the characters (including Mandy Pepperidge, Fawn Lebowitz, and Larry Kroger, not yet combined with Miller's Pinto) made their appearance earlier in "Doug Kinney's High School Yearbook" in the Lampoon. Harold Ramis, a member of Zeta Beta Tau, added some elements inspired by his experiences at Washington University (St. Louis).
