Senior Honorary Societies
What are the Senior Honorary Societies are at your school? How hard are they to get into? What types of things do they do for you school? What % of your groups are Greek?
I'm just curious, as I'm starting applications to the 2 here at Nebraska.
The first is The Innocents Society, which is a unique Nebraska thing. It was founded in 1903 as an all male honorary by some of our notable alumni at the time. Each spring only 13 members (now co-ed) of the Junior class are tackled into the Society. It's pretty difficult to get into, b/c obviously there are only 13 spots (after the 13 Popes named Innocent), and selection is based on service to the UNL campus, Leadership, and academic acheivement. Specifically, you have to be really involved AND hold leadership positions in those organizations. Grades aren't that big, as you only need a 3.3 to be eligible. They do various community service projects, Co-sponsor Master's Week which is the return of successful alumni to talk about what UNL helped them to do; They also exchange the Missouri Nebraska Bell with Mizzou's QEBH society at the Mizzou - NU football game, as well as host events with the Chancellor. Of the 13 members , I know that 10 are greek for sure, and one other might be. Historically the split has been about 70% greek.
The other Honorary is Mortar Board, which is National. It was founded as an all Female honorary in 1914 at UNL, and went coed at the same time as Innocents. It has the same type of requirements as Innocents, but they take about 25 juniors each year. They do a lot of the same things as Innocents, only without the events with the Chancellor, and they have a gavel exchange with Mizzou's Mortar Board chapter also at the football game. Of the 25 members this year, I'm pretty sure that about 16 are greek with a couple others I'm not sure about. Historically Greeks have been about 65% of the membership of Mortar Board.
