Sophomore Rush at UNC Chapel Hill

Hey guys,

Hope y'all are doing well during finals time, if you're at that point! I am, so Greek Chat is my 15 minute break.

I just wanted to know if anyone has heard anything specific to sophomore rush at UNC Chapel Hill, where I attend. I have searched GC thoroughly and come up with a few posts on it, but I really am dying for more information.

I didn't rush this past fall because I come from out of state and was clueless about sororities. By the time rushing really occurred to me, it was too late to register, and now I regret it.

I should have about a 3.6 cumulative GPA, if not higher, after these exams. I will secure recs for all the chapters, if I can - I already have the promise of one that should be strong, but is that something that I need to be worrying about right now? I don't know when I should be submitting my recs. Registration starts in May, so, soon?

The thing that scares me is that I don't really know that many girls in sororities. I know a few in 3 different ones, but I don't know how willing they'd be to put in a good word (since we don't know each other that well). Should I refrain from contacting them for advice, or would that possibly be beneficial? Is it a plus or a minus that I'm facebook friends with many sorority girls?

Apologies for the novel! I'm just super nervous now that I've realized this is something I really want to do. I hate that my chances won't be the same as if I had just been smart enough to rush this year!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I can't offer you any specific insight or advice regarding UNC Chapel Hill. As to contacting sorority members you know, you need to check the Panhellenic "No Contact" date. If it hasn't already kicked in, it ought to soon assuming a Fall Recruitment. After that date no sorority member can talk to a PNM regarding Recruitment without getting into trouble. It may be too late for you to pursue your contacts. That's a shame because if they're actives they'll be the ones making the decisions in the fall.

If you want to PM me specifics about recs, etc feel free to do so since I live in the area and can point you in the proper direction of the Alumnae Panhellenic and such.

As a sophmore if you secure recs and keep an open mind you stand a decent chance of receiving a bid at UNC.

And I -believe- that the No Contact period begins on the first day of school, but I would have to double check. If that's the case, should I go ahead and reach out to some of the sisters I know and am friendly with?

If that's the case, then I say yes, definitely reach out to sisters you know. Make them aware that you're rushing, ask for any advice they have, etc. Just be sure to keep an open mind if they offer negative opinions towards any other sororities.. take it with a grain of salt and make your own decisions when you go through recruitment!

I recall reading UNC Chapel Hill recruitment threads and having upperclassman PNMs say that being a soph DID hurt them a little and that they may have experienced heavier first round cuts because of it.

Something I find to be important in terms of rushing as a soph is knowing women in chapters. Chapters may really only be interested in taking upperclasswomen that they already know from classes or other places, so getting to know them is beneficial.

I had a good friend from high school go through rush at Carolina as a sophomore - she did say some houses at UNC do make heavy cuts against sophomores during early rounds, but she got her first choice on pref night. I think it helped her a lot to know girls in the houses - a girl she'd had class with freshman she saw her during rush week and really pushed for her. I'd suggest keeping an open mind, but I've heard of a few girls going through as sophomores and having good experiences!

All the houses at UNC are strong and recruitment is not SEC competitive. Keep an open mind, don't get discouraged about early cuts and you should find a home. UNC has guaranteed bid if you can keep a full schedule so rank but don't drop houses. Keep your chin up no matter what. Many houses will even do snap bids after bid day. Don't forget to post your story next August!

UNCLei, I'm a UNC alumna and have been heavily involved in my sorority's recruitment efforts since I graduated.

Being a sophomore used to be a mark against women, but now, I do not believe so. There are maybe three houses that frown upon non-freshmen, but the rest of us do not. (Especially a sophomore who has shown that she can maintain an excellent GPA!)

Since you have plenty of time, go ahead and secure references for each house. It can really help you!
