Crash in Space

A collision has occured between a Russian and US satellite, spreading debris almost 1000 miles

So that stuff is flying around the planet? Lordy. And why would defunct satellites still be in orbit? Is there no way to bring them down? That's crazy.

From what I understand, it's common to keep old satellites in orbit. I think it would be too expensive to bring them back in.
