DePauw Men's Recruitment Results (Jan. '09)

Low numbers all around this year mostly due to the fact that this year's freshman class is overwhelmingly female.

Quota was 25.

Phi Kappa Psi 25
Alpha Tau Omega 22
Phi Gamma Delta 19
Phi Delta Theta 18
Beta Theta Pi 18
Delta Upsilon 15
Sigma Chi 15
Delta Tau Delta 12
Delta Chi 8
Sigma Alpha Epsilon 8
Sigma Nu 5

Of the 165 people who joined houses, 164 got their first choice.

How does a men's quota work? I don't think I've ever heard of this before! Is DePauw the only campus that does this?

Do you have the numbers for the women? www.thedepauw.com is not updated. Typically, they post the bid lists.

There is an article on the DPU quota system for the IFC:

Aaron Weaver, vice president for recruitment for IFC, said the quota policy placed more attention on the quality of the new members.

"In the past, chapters had the ability to set quota at whatever number they wanted to," Weaver said. "We wanted to increase quality instead of quantity."

While only 171 men participated in rush, they represented 71 percent of the 230 eligible freshmen men, which Weaver said was equivalent to previous years. The number of eligible freshmen men affected the number at which IFC set its quota: the goal was 25 new members for each house. Only Phi Kappa Psi reached quota.

Very interesting - thanks. According to the OP, there are 11 fraternities. Quota of 25. 11 x 25 is 275, yet there are only 230 eligible men. So I guess instead of striving to reach Quota, it was more of a "cap" so that some chapters couldn't take everyone?? I know I don't know all the details, but it seems sort of pointless to have a Quota when only one chapter got to 25. Even some of the ones who are lower may have chosen to go lower - choosing quality over quantity.

This year, I will agree, quota did seem pointless. The only reason it was put into place was because of Rush 2005 where one house had 48 on bidnight and another house had 2.

The numbers this year are closer than usual; the smaller houses really picked it up this year and did better than they usually do.
