Why should the get paid?
Ladies, the following question has come up quite a bit lately
Should college athletes be paid?
My opinion is no, they shouldnt. Why should they get paid extra. They are already on scholarships. It makes me upset, because I myself go to school on scholarship, academic scholarship, and I never see nor hear individuals supporting myself and others like me receiving some kind of monetary support for making good grades. Give me your take on the issue
toodles!!
hoping for blue,
shanna

from what i understand, athletes receive a "stipends" because they practice so much that they can't hold a job. but, hey, some people study so much that they can't have a job! (any engineering or pre-med majors know exactly what i speak of).
i don't think it is right at all!!!

I saw this topic and just had to post. I don't think that college athletes should be paid or receive stipends.
If they can play and have the grades... give them scholarships.
I was a music major most of my college career. Trust me: I practiced more than any athletes I've met. (Between group rehersals & individual practice). I don't recall anyone suggesting that music majors get paid since we couldn't manage our time better.
I knew a lot of student who weren't athletes, but were very involved in other student groups (GLOS, Student Government, etc.). Maybe schools should just start offering time management courses for students who can't handle what they take on.

College athletes want to get paid because they don't have enough time to get a job so the rely on stipends(The few that get them). Also they realize that they are bringing MILLIONS of dollars in revenue to the NCAA and they are not recieving any of it. I think if someone was making a ton of money off my hardwork I would want at least a little bit of it. Its only right. They are not asking for the ridiculous checks that Pro players get. Just enough to live comfortably on.

Um, they are already getting paid. Athletes at my university and MOST Div. I universities not only receive stipends but a FREE education (that a lot of them don't utilize properly). Sheesh, isn't that enough? Yes, they bring millions to the school, but they are also getting the opportunity to showcase their skills so that they can be drafted and make millions later. (Ok, that's not as true for basketball anymore, but definitely still hold true for football.)

I think college athletes should get a stipend if they are not allowed to work based on eligibility rules (Certain divisions in the NCAA prohibit student-athletes from working). Most college athletes ARE NOT going to the pros, and many come from families that cannot afford to provide even basic food plans, which are not often covered by scholarships. I don't think they should get a salary, however, unless ALL athletes will be getting a salary. It is not the job of colleges to provide a training ground for students entering the pro arena, so all athletes should be treated as equitably as possible.

How much is enough?
I ask because UMass Amherst had to give back its NCAA banner when Marcus Camby admitted to taking jewelry and cars from the UMass staff. The colleges routinely cross the line to woo new talent. So I really can't sympathize with the poor ball player because I haven't seen any.
True, a good team gives the college revenue and exposure. But the colleges also put millions into scholarships, coaches, athletic centers, tutors, trainers, uniforms, etc.
Although, not everyone goes on to make the big bucks, I can't say that in my 3 years in college that I have ever met a student-athlete who didn't have a place to go if they needed cash. Even the rugby players got money-and they aren't even NCAA sanctioned!
Pay me! I contribute to the high GPA of my college. Can I get a witness?

Okay... NO!
My boyfriend plays football for our university, and we argue about this all the time.
1. I graduated well within the top 10 percent of my class; he didn't come close. Now that's cool, but while my mother struggles to come up with the expenses my partial scholarship doesn't cover, he pays nothing.
2. I live in a small dorm room and share a community bath. He has his own apartment, own bathroom, swimming pool, a cafeteria at the apt. complex, facilities where the atheletes receive FREE tutoring when they want it...
3. Plus a healthy stipend while I work my behind off at my workstudy!
I realize that atheletes bring a lot of money into the university, especially since the one we attend is private and not state-funded, but my goodness. Where does it end? Seems like academic success isn't high on the priority list for being rewarded!

I know that NCAA rules don't allow them to work, so I agree with the stipends, to a certain extent. I mean they have everything paid for them, housing, books, meal plans. So why do they need more income in a month than the avg student who takes more course load and manages to work 15hrs and has a 3.5 GPA. Its not like the men's team is any good, they're terrible and have been so for a while. So all the money they were bringing in the past has dropped, can their stipend drop too?

Hello everyone. i hopr you all dont mind me posting here. I kinda agree with what most of you are saying about not paying the athlete and giving them stipends, but it seems that most of you are talking about athletes that attend the big money schools. What about the athletes that attend the HBCU's or the small private schools that get scholorships that sometimes doesnt even cover half of tution, let alone books. Im an athlete, but i still live in a SMALL dorm room, still have to do workstudy, and still have to come up with tution money. what about us. we are not allowed to get jobs, and with some of the sports that we play, its like we do it year round, so what about us. i see it like this; the coach is getting paid and looking glorious off of the athletes, so the athletes shoud at least be able to get something in return. thats why we have so many young athletes going straight to the pro's out of high school, because the money is attractive. why should they go to college and work hard just to be able to get enough money to pay tuition while most of their families are still living in poverty when they can go to the pro's and make MILLIONS and be able to support their family. but this is just my opinion.
hope everyone has a nice day.
