Scholarship ideas and drinking policies

Hey everyone! As my wonderful role of advisor, I am trying to help the Gamma Sigma chapter of AOTT raise their GPA. Do any of you have ideas for different study activities or GPA boosting techniques? I know when I was a new member, we had study hall 2 times aweek, that was also attending by older sisters and we had an "A" bag passed around at chapter and if you got an "A", you put your name in the bag and someone was drawn at the end of the meeting and got a goody bag! Any other ideas?
Also, I am just curious if this is a national AOTT thing or just as Elon. When I was pledging, we were FORBIDDEN to drink till initiation. I mean, if we drank, we would be depledged(it happened to someone in my pledge class). I thought this was a national AOTT thing, but I just learned that the new members of Gamma Sigma, while STRONLY discouraged from drinking, are not at the risk of being depledged or anything that harsh. Anyone have any info for me? I am asking this as a friend, not an advisor and I don't want to get my chapter in trouble, so just let me know. Thanks everyone!
Lesley

alcohol

It is my understanding that a chapter can have certain policies stricter than IHQ allows like GPA. However, IMHO without all the facts of a particular case, to depledge someone of legal age who happens to drink is wrong. If they are drinking repsonsibly and not bringing shame to the fraternity as a standards issue, it is OK. Underage drinking should not be allowed and I could see this as grounds for dismissal for the pledge and the actives who served her.

You can check out the International Alcohol policy on the private side of the AOII web site. Look under Chapter Services and then under policies. You can find a wealth of information there.

More info ...

To clear up some things ...

the Alcohol Policy is there to also supplement state/provincial laws (remember, we ARE international - only 14 NPC groups are) - so if it's against the law to drink - AOII abides by that ... talk to the Chapter President about being the example for the chapter by being smart, and making sure her chapter leads the way in being Smart Cookies too!

One thing that been bothering me for years ... during recruitment, we expound that we are non-alcoholic/no pressure to drink etc .... yet some of the first things we do is turn around, and do an mixer with alcohol ... could we look more like hyprocates? No wonder women drop out during their New Mmeber period because it looks like we can't even stand by what we say ... if anyone else has thoughts about this, let'er rip ... it's just very sad to see outstanding campus leaders who WON'T come near a sorority with a 10-foot pole because what we say isn't always what we mean ...

I do agree with what you are saying---it does seem sometimes that we reward with alcohol, after saying that it doesn't matter. I will say that I did not drink when I joined AOTT, and I NEVER felt pressured to drink. I think I can say the same for most of my pledge sisters too. But we also had the reputation on our campus as the nice, sweet, good girls and I think that was why we never felt that pressure and we also liked that rep and wanted to stick with it. Any ideas how to make the girls "smart cookies(I love that term!!)"

This semester we (Pi Delta) just implimented a few new programs in hopes of boosting our GPAs. One is study buddies, sisters are paired up to encourage each other to study. The pair that has the highedt GPA at the end of the semester gets a prize. Also, at meeting each week TCBY gift certificates are given to sisters who at an A on a test or paper. Hope this helps.
