Regarding the application to work in the Obama administration:

Only the smallest details are excluded; traffic tickets carrying fines of less than $50 need not be reported, the application says. Applicants are asked whether they or anyone in their family owns a gun. They must include any e-mail that might embarrass the president-elect, along with any blog posts and links to their Facebook pages.


The application also asks applicants to “please list all aliases or ‘handles’ you have used to communicate on the Internet.”

Definitely - I know of grad schools and employers that do internet searches of applicants, and part of that is looking over their Facebook pages, etc.

Yeah, after that whole deal, I don't blame them.

Although I'm sure there are people out there who have never posted anything the least bit off but just have really stupid usernames.

And also, don't let your friends tag photos of you on Facebook, make your stuff private, etc etc etc. For the love of God, WE LOOK UP THIS INFO ON JURORS. It's just like putting it up on the wall of your office building or tossing it up in the newspaper.

Exactly - there are ways to have a Facebook page and not have it turn into something that would hinder your chances of future employment/admission to grad school/etc. I keep my page private so only friends could see it, I monitor the photos of me that are tagged, and I delete any postings or comments that are vulgar/offensive/etc. Luckily my friends are pretty mature, so it's not really a problem.

My mother told me, when I was young, don't say anything to anybody that you wouldn't want said on the evening news and don't put anything in writing that you wouldn't want published in the newspaper.
