Zeituni Onyango
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/20...ews&position=2
I'm not sure how the whole public housing thing works, but does anyone know how an undocumented person with a standing deportation order qualifies? Not being snarky, and nothing against her nephew but I am very curious.

It's in one of the linked stories on the sidebar:
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/re...icleid=1129261
Not going to say anything about the story as a whole, because I haven't had a chance to read it. But, before anyone talks about the Herald's conservative reputation, the paper tends to be an equal-opportunity critic of politicians.
In that, the paper frequently goes overboard to criticize people on both sides of the aisle (I've seen it go after both Republicans and Democrats equally over the past few years).

Ah thanks. Well, this is what I was going to say anyway:
Quote:
Onyango’s refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, noncriminal violation of immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the U.S.
|
There are a lot of people living here who've been told to leave. Laying aside my personal feelings on immigration issues, I do believe that the law should be upheld. As the article states, this is not a criminal issue but an administrative one.

I wasn't disputing what the article says, and my question is a strictly administrative one. I wondered how Ms. Onyango qualifies for public housing. According to the HUD website, "eligibility for a housing voucher is ....limited to US citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status".

Simply because she was eligible when she applied. The article noted that she had procured visas on various occasions. Eligible immigrant status is not restricted to long-term or permanent visitors. She would eventually have been discovered, but the truth is, when people live quietly and don't draw attention to themselves, they are often overlooked while the agencies go after the folks who are committing crimes and such.

The same reason that McCain's brother's call to 911 was reported on. It's sensational and this is a heated election.

Part of me wants to avoid all newspapers and TV news shows until Tuesday night. I'm not sure whether I'd believe anything printed over the next few days.
