Smile Competitive Recruitment Story!!

Hey ya'll! I just went through recruitment this past summer at a competitive school, and it was quite an experience! I wanted to share my story so any girls thinking about rushing can kind of get a feel, and maybe help others relive theirs ! Please, please, please, if you figure out my school don't post anything! I guess I will name the sororities after designers!
Fendi
Gucci
Marc Jacobs
Prada
Chanel
Luis Vuitton
Dolce and Gabbana
Coach
Juicy

Well I am from the south, and I knew a lot about rush from my mom's friends and older girls who were in sororities. All summer I prepared by getting recs for every house, making my resume, getting my wardrobe ready, and working out! I did know about a couple of the sororities' stereotyes, but everyone told me to go in with an open mind. Although they were always still in the back of my mind.It didn't matter if I was neccesarily in the "top" house I just wanted to find where I fit in! Finally the day arrived when I moved off to school! All the girls were talking about rush. What is it going to be like, do you know what house you want to be in, do you have recs, are you a legacy? I was surprised about how many girls did not have recs! I was told that some houses will cut you if you don't have a rec! I just figured that I was better off !

Day 1: From 8 am to 7 pm
I was so nervous today! We all had to wear a recruitment shirt this day, and I was a little sad that I wouldn't be able to show off my style! Oh well, I just needed to shine with my personality! This is the order I visited the houses..

Chanel: Known as the "southern belle" house, friendly, VERY outgoing and bubbly, good conversation, but they hooked arms with you the entire conversation which was kind of wierd at first lol. Overall I really liked this house!

Dolce & Gabbana: This was the house my mom was rooting for, because she started this chapter at her school as the first sorority there although I was not technically a legacy. Going into the house I knew they were known as the partiers, which wasn't a bad thing in my mind. I was not impressed at all with this house, they all seemed kind of rude and bored even when they were talking to all of us as a group.

Coach:This was the newest chapter on campus, and did not have the greatest reputation. I had a family friend in this house who was super sweet, so I wanted to give it a chance. I talked to three girls in this house, and the conversations were just kind of akward, but they were all very nice.

Prada: I didn't know anything about this house going in except one of my high school friends, Jessica, really wanted this one. The girl I talked to was hilarious. She reminded me of that goofy girl in every group of friends. I remember it being BOILING hot in the room, but had a really good time!

Marc Jacobs: I didn't know anything about this house either going in. When I walked in I got escorted into the library with a couple other girls, and I got to sit in a chair! The room was cool, and quiet, and I could actually have a real conversation without having to scream! The girl who rushed me was a senior and held a position, and was so friendly! I also met the vice president that day! Favorite house of the day!

Juicy: This house was known as having bigger girls, but when I went in I saw more thin and pretty girls! I was definately suprised! I didn't like the girl I talked to, because she like intently stared me down which was kind of akward.

Fendi: I knew a girl from home's sister was in the house, and I liked her but I didn't know anything else about the house. It was the smallest house, and the girl I talked to only wanted to talk about the hills! I felt like she didn't really get to know me...

Gucci: I was EXHAUSTED by this house!! I knew this was known as the "smart" house, and I also happened to have like 7 recs for this house, because my mom happened to have a lot of friends who were Guccis at other schools. There seemed to be mostly brunette sisters at this house,so I didn't know if that was what they were looking for. I had a good conversation with the girl, and she told me she just rushed one of my good friends from high school! She told me how much she liked talking to her! I was pretty sure I would be asked back the next day!

After day 1 I was so drained, but I felt really good about my conversations and was excited to see where I would go back day 2!

How are you not "technically" a legacy? Just curious...keep posting (just don't make us all wait FOREVER between posts)!

Day 2!

* I wasn't a legacy to D&G, because while my mom and her friends got the chapter approved and all the paper work filled out; they were seniors and didn't initiate themselves

Haha sorry I totally forgot about Luis Vuitton for day 1, obvioulsy not a standout lol

Luis Vuitton: This house I heard was "good", and I knew that a handfull of older girls from my high school were in this house. I went in thinking that I would like them...WRONG! The girls didn't cheer, didn't seem excited to be there, and the girl I talked to talked about herself the entire time. When I would try to say something she would cut me off

Day 2: Philanthropy Day

I was told that today would be a lot better than the first day! We could attend a maximum of 7 houses today. I got to wear a cute sundress and sandals too yay! So I arrive to my pi chi meeting spot to get my schedule. When I opened it up I saw I was invited back to six. To be honest I was a little upset because I didn't have a full schedule; but I still had my top houses! I was also a little shocked, b/c I got dropped from Gucci...I had a bunch of very good recs, and a good convo Oh, and my friend, Jessica who was rushed by the same girl ( who said she loved Jessica) was dropped from them too.

Dolce & Gabbana: I liked them a lot more today! The girl I talked to was fun, energetic, and nice! I also loved their philanthropy and songs! Mom would be happy lol

Marc Jacobs: The set up was so cute! The girl I talked to today ( who also happened to be a senior who held a position) was so cute and friendly! I felt very at home at this house!

Juicy: I wanted to give these girls another chance, but the conversation was still soooo awkward! I told the girl I don't know much about football, and she proceeded to talk about players and game formations the entire time yawn!

Prada: I talked to two girls today. The first girl I had an AMAZING conversation with; I felt like we had known each other for forever! The second girl I had an okay convo with, but nothing compared to girl number one . Oh and the girls kneeled at my feet holding my drink the hold time which was also very akward lol!

Coach: Today I was in a group with one sister and two pnms. The other pnm and the sister had so much in common; like they were from the same area, and were both nursing majors. I tried to contribute to the conversation, but it was hard to get a word in edge wise.

Chanel: By this house it was dark out, and we were in the middle of a tunder storm! So needless to say I was a wet, frizzy mess! I was devastated that this was my last house, and I looked the way I did I heard this house was very judgemental. But I had a very good conversation in this house, and the girl seemed very interested in what I was saying, and we had a lot in common. So I was hoping they would feel sympathy for my situation!

By the end of day 2, I was soo nervous! After not being asked back to houses I thought I had good conversations in was unsure of myself! But I was pretty confident with most of the houses!

7 recs would send off buzzers in my house (and not the good kind).

I was thinking that too. When I went through, a girl on my floor had 4 recs for each of the "elite" houses (in quotes because looking back on it its such a joke).

Not to hijack, but I wonder if sometimes an ungodly amount of recs does make chapters want to cut girls.

Haha well it probably wasn't exactly seven! I was kind of exaggerating lol! Truthfully I'm not sure exactly how many I had, but I had a good amount. Also I didn't plan it for that house it just turned out the a lot of the women who volunteered to write me a rec were Guccis

I think if we got more than like 3-4 recs for one girl, it would annoy me and make me want to cut her. But that's just me

Day 3: Skit Day

I was so excited for today! I heard that it would be the most fun!We could attend a max of four houses today! We were supposed to dress up in "tea party" like attire...FUN! I met my pi chi group in the usual spot, and I recieved my schedule. I opened it and it said Marc Jacobs, Coach, and Juicy....I thought I would burst into tears right there! I only had one of my top choices left, Marc Jacobs, and my two bottom choices! I was soooo devastated! I noticed that a lot of girls were already sobbing! Supposedly after day 2 is when the biggest cuts are made. I pulled myself together though..I still had Marc Jacobs which had been one of my favorites, and I was going to give Coach and Juicy another chance!

Juicy: Today I was yet again in a group with two pnms to one sister. Their skit was cute, but the whole thing just felt awkward to me. The girl I was talking to only talked about how their image for being bigger girls was ridiculous and that all of the younger sisters were pretty! She just kind of ranted and raved the whole time.

Marc Jacobs: Today I talked to the girl in charge of all of the songs, skits, and dances ( which was funny b/c it was skit day)! We had a great conversation! It flowed very naturally, and I felt very at home! The girls seemed to love being Marc Jacobs!

Coach: The girl I talked to was very friendly, but I just didn't feel at home in this house. The conversations seemed kind of forced, and there were awkward silences.

We had to fill out our pref card at the end of the night, and I was torn up inside! I called my mom, and started sobbing to her that I knew that Coach and Juicy were not the houses for me; I just felt so awkward and uncomfortable there even though they were nice girls! I knew that Marc Jacobs was the place for me, but I still needed to maximize my chances. I listed Marc Jacobs and Coach.

I really hate it when people post in these things and have nothing relevant to say, but.... I'm just really excited that I figured out where you go to school. I can almost NEVER do that.
that's all, sorry kids.

Remember, she is in the south where this type of thing is fairly usual.

I think 7 wasn't too bad. Definiely not overmuch if you wanna go there.

I hope GC sheds new light on this "too many recs" situation. Look at how excited we get over rush threads for people we don't even know! My love of Kappa and wanting the best for her is part of what prompts me to write recs. In regard to choosing new members, as an alum I have no decision-making authority anymore. My only contribution is helping the chapter women get to know a PNM a little better, making their lives a little easier during such a hectic week (I hope).

A friend's daughter is rushing at Ole Miss this week. There are 6 KDs in her family. Not in her case but just an example: A chapter would be so petty as to deny her mom/aunts/g'mom especially and close friends as well the joy of recommending her to their GLO?!? Sisterhood, yeah, right.

MSKKG:

I am in no way an expert on rush, much less rush in the south, but I have a suggestion for your friend's daughter. Why not ONE signed by all the KDs in the girl's family? Or spread it to two recs?

It would really resound with me if I read one family rec and/or one multiple friend rec signed by so many people. Less paperwork and lots of praise.
