I tend to loathe any show that depicts peasants/medieval times/sorcery. I'm not into mythical creatures, lords and serfs, or anything like that. Think half the episodes of "Stargate", LOTR, etc. Anyway, I suffer through many of these shows because my husband is a huge fan, and therefore have absorbed quite a bit.
That being said, I think that what will keep this show down are:
- the goofy "antics" music that happens whenever Merlin is about to use his magic
- Merlin's cockiness - as in, I'll beat you, and you will never know why
- the bad cgi - do they have to slo-mo the "magic"?
- dragons and other mythical creatures. For this reason, I cannot watch anything that Elijah Wood is in.
- not sure of the target audience, but I think it more suits the male 8-12 year age range
One thing I noticed is that some of the content/cinematography/writing is like what you would see on the BBC, but not quite enough. It would have to take itself more seriously to work in that vein. Otherwise, ditch the accents and make it more contemporary. Being stuck between the two is distraction.
