LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct.1, 2008) – The Alpha Gamma Delta sorority members and alumni will join together in celebrating a "Centennial Celebration Weekend," marking the sorority's 100th year milestone as the oldest chapter at the University of Kentucky.
The Centennial Celebration kicks off Oct. 3-5 and includes a weekend of festivities, as over 300 alumnae will fly in from across the nation and over 100 collegians will look to participate in the celebration.
"Through working to prepare for the Centennial, I have found that the reaches of Alpha Gamma Delta surpass the here and now," said Amanda Harris, collegiate centennial co-chairwoman. "The sorority has reached out and impacted sisters for over 100 years at the University of Kentucky. Now, as I work with the alumnae to prepare for this celebration of sisterhood, I find that Alpha Gam knows no generational gaps, and I have found true friends with the women who have paved the way to make our chapter what it is today."
The weekend will honor the sorority's 100 years of success and service for the university and Lexington area. The celebration encompasses an interactive sorority house tour; campus tours; a reception for the alumnae; an outing to Keeneland; a chapter dinner dance, attended by Jackie Brannon Strutts, International Alpha Gamma Delta president, and Julie Waitman Cretin, executive director of the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation; a morning brunch; and historic chapter ritual.
"Never did we expect a response this big," said Bobbi Schoff Sweeney, Centennial co-chairwoman. "This reflects on the sincere bonds of sisterhood shared so long ago on UK's campus."
The
Epsilon chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority established itself on campus May 14, 1908, and stands as the second oldest Alpha Gamma Delta chapter in the nation.
Previously this year, the sorority launched their 100th year celebration by hosting the Alpha Gam Band Jam, a philanthropy event aimed to raise funds for their foundation benefitting diabetics research.
