A couple bonking at a disused railway station in Mpumalanga, were run over and killed by a goods train on Friday.

The man was dismembered. The unidentified victims were having sex under the platform of an old railway station, close to the railway line. They allegedly ignored a warning from the driver of a passing goods train that hit them.

Their ages were estimated at late 20s and early 30s. The gruesome incident occurred at the old Kinross station on Friday night, according to police.

Nearby residents suspected the woman could have been a prostitute because the railway station is frequented by those who ply their trade on the outskirts of the tiny town.

They said the majority of the prostitutes’ clients were motorists and truck drivers .

However, when business is slow, the prostitutes apparently go to the local pubs and taverns to solicit business.

Police said the victims had not yet been identified and could not confirm whether prostitution was involved.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the man was mutilated and died at the scene while the woman, who was severely injured, died at the Evander Hospital on Saturday. They both sustained head injuries as well as broken or dismembered limbs.

According to Khoabane, the train driver saw the couple from a distance and repeatedly hooted “but they continued with their business”.

“The station is no longer in use, but the railway lines are still used by goods trains,” he said.

An inquest docket has been opened and Khoabane appealed to families with missing relatives to contact Kinross police or their nearest police station.
