Duke Recruitment Jan. 2007
303 bids extended (a few more are "pending," according to the student paper, so the final total may be slightly higher)
Quota = 31
Article in student paper has more info:
http://media.www.dukechronicle.com/m...epublisher.com
Edited to add: At a recent Duke Panhellenic-sponsored event, one of the women on Duke's board of trustees addressed values, the ways women are treated at Duke, and made some suggestions for change. Her remarks are on the university's web site:
http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2007/02/jenkins.html
Note: Her remarks include a reference to the "core four" sororities at Duke; it's my understanding that these are the -- supposedly -- most "elite" chapters at Duke. She does not name them.

Hard to guess. In the last year or less, there've certainly been other articles about the core four that were much (oh yeah, much ) worse.

That is an extremely interesting article...and it sure does take me back! I was Greek at Duke way back when (my GLO is no longer there) but I think the author did a great job of capturing the two-headed monster than rush can be. Here you have young women - extremely bright, probably very savvy and socially aware (and I'm not trying to say students at other schools are not...as an alum interviewer I'm simply acutely aware of what applicants to Duke bring to the table to begin with) and how they struggle with the process. They know, inherently, of the system's flaws and yet they want to still be an "insider."
I thought this was a very good inside-the-mind "view" of girls going through recruitment - especially those trying to stay true to themselves while still trying to fit in and knowing they're being judged constantly. It's a fine line to walk and you can see how they struggle with it.

I thought this article was very interesting, but just a bit cynical. That's easy enough to be as regards the process, however.
Funny. I guessed the Core Four before I even read the article! And I'm not anywhere NEAR Duke!

When you think about it isn't there some variation of the "Core Four" on every campus? I felt like the writer of the article tried to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Can someone PM me and tell me what groups are in the "core four" please?
Thank you.

I'm probably in the minority but I didn't think the article put any good light on sororities. Especially the "core four" and the rumors about them.
I have to admit that I'm kind of glad ADPi wasn't mentioned at all in the article (our Omicron chapter is Duke).

I grew up in Durham, and lived about 10 minutes from Duke. My impression from the student body is that Greek Life is looked down upon, even though there is a rich history behind a lot of the chapters. I'm pretty sure that the writer of the article reflects a lot of opinions from the student body as well. I do agree that the article did not put a good light on sorority life and the recruitment process.

Duke blog
Rolling Stone quoted from a blog authored, apparently, by a Duke fraternity member. As negative and damaging as the other articles were, this blog is unbelievable. I can't imagine any incoming freshman--or parent--reading this and wanting any part of recruitment. In my opinion, this is the type of thing that hurts the image of Greek life nationwide. Even though the "Core Four" are mentioned most prominently in this "obsrvr" site, it casts a negative light on other groups--both male and female--as well. You'll need to click on the appropriate section titles to read all the postings.
