Calling all Baird's Owners! Nu Phi Mu?

I was at an antique shop and picked up an interesting pin for $.99 today.

It is the size of a pledge pin, shaped like a diamond/kite and is navy blue with gold colored writing (though its all enamel- not gold). On top is a star, with the Greek letters Nu Phi Mu underneath it. Below the Greek letters is what looks like a torch (but I am not sure). My camera phone is acting up, so I can't take a picture of it right now.

Anyone heard of this group?

Gee...I don't see it listed in my 1968 ed. of "Baird's." Perhaps it's one of the less prominent locals or even a high school group? Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Look at this:

Beta Sigma Phi is an international non-academic sorority founded in 1931 by Walter Ross. Started to assist women during the Great Depression, it has grown to the 'largest women's friendship' network in the world, with 200,000 members in 30 countries. Its motto, and Greek initials, means Life, Learning and Friendship.

Official site
Facts about Beta Sigma Phi

Beta Sigma Phi is unique from other sororities in that it is purely social. While many chapters may indeed do community service work, there is no requirement to do so.
Betas enjoy state conventions every year. Each year the sorority has a new theme.
Betas are initiated several times. There is the first Nu Phi Mu degree and then several other degrees of membership: Ritual of Jewels, Exemplar, Preceptor, Laureate and Master.
The levels of membership are a unique trait to Beta Sigma Phi and members aspire to reach the next level.
Each level has its own badge and guard.
The Beta Sigma Phi Badge is usually a large enamel Phi with the greek letters Beta and Sigma engraved on the left and right respectively. The top of the Phi may resemble a torch.
Beta Sigma Phi is a sorority and considers itself such.
Most chapters are community based, but Beta Sigma Phi as chapters on college campuses, although college is not a requirement to join.
Beta Sigma Phi official colors are Black and Gold.
The symbol is the Torch.
The magazine is called "The Torch of Beta Sigma Phi"
Beta Sigma Phi has no official mascot, although a Bumble Bee is often used. The "busy Beta Bees"
Beta Sigma Phi's official flower is the Yellow Rose.

It sounds like a Beta Sigma Phi pledge pin.

Interesting! Thanks for posting all of that. I did see the Craft Fair, but not the BSP info.

Nu Phi Mu is indeed one of the degrees of membership in Beta Sigma Phi. It has usually been bestowed on members between 18-21, I believe.

Ugh...I am so terrible with my knowledge of the different degrees...but the Nu Phi Mu thing immediately made me say BETA!
