Possible or Not?

Is it possible to remain good friends with an ex?

I think it is, but many of my friends don't. Thoughts, opinions?

Caryn, I think you know my thoughts on this particular scenario. Speaking from a general standpoint, I say no.

Trying to be friends with an ex after a break is your way of trying to find some way to justify keeping said ex in your life. If the wounds are fresh I'd definitely say no but if a few years have gone by and feelings for the person have passed I think it could be possible to keep in touch.

It really depends on the circumstance. Some of my college friends dated people throughout the entire time they were in college, but realized that they didn't want to stay with eachother after college. Some were moving across the country, or in different countries altogether. Most were able to part and now, three years after college, can honestly say that they are friends and communicate regularly.

Otherwise, I don't think it's possible unless you were absolutely good friends before dating...and even then, it's rare.

Yes. I am. It all depends on the reasons for the breakup. Basically - when we broke up, it was more admitting to ourselves and the world that the relationship had become a brother/sister type one rather than boyfriend/girlfriend, which is why I think a lot of people haven't understood it. Apparently we were better actors (to our friends and to each other) than we thought. Of course now when you see us talking together all the tension is gone because we're NOT trying to be a couple.

No one knows what is really going on but the two people involved.

Yes, as long as neither have residual romantic feelings for the other.

It's possible. I probably would have stayed friends with my ex, had he not cried every time I tried to break up with him. I finally just had to stop calling.

In his defense, I was a little mean in my college days.

Never been able to make it work...I don't think it's a good idea, even if there's a friendship still.
