Losing points because of study sessions

my cousin/best friend (diff sorority) is getting brought up for not making points because they won't excuse her for a learning center for her hardest class. it's only held once a week during their chapter, but it's a hard engineering class and she needs the learning center (they go over all of the homework for the next class and things - i don't know if anyone has anything like this but they are really important at my school). to me it sounds like their house is not putting academics first by not letting her go to this thing that she NEEDS to pass. i know it's not a class itself, but these are almost vital to passing classes. she is thinking about quitting now and this is the only reason...has anyone ever heard anything like this?

in chi o (as im sure you know) this would NOT be ok. people can miss chapter for study sessions, lsat tutor, meet with a TA/professor, out of town, etc. and its all excused.

as i said, different sorority. i won't name it because i don't want to seem like i'm dissing her house, but it is npc. i've never had any problems like this, so i just don't get how it makes ANY sense at all.... does anyone?

Whenever excuse notes are brought up in Executive Council, anything school related is automatically excused.

When scheduling classes that fall at night, the member tries not to pick up a class that conflicts with chapter meeting time. Sometimes that's not always possible, though. I know that we've made special arrangements with members who couldn't do anything about changing class/tutor times, like meeting with chapter council/EC members at another time to keep informed of chapter business.

If a member wants to be a part of the chapter badly enough and otherwise attends events regularly, she shouldn't be penalized for missing chapter meetings because of a session she can't get out of.

If her EC is giving her a hard time about it, I'd try suggesting that she contact HQ to see if there's anything that can be done.

That just seems kinda wierd not to let it be excused. Any academics excuse is valid as long as its a tutor, study group, class, or something with the class. As an engineer I know how important the extra classes are. I think that it is BS not to let her be excused.

Something makes me think that there is more to this story... I can't imagine not being excused for something school-related.

well, apparently they said if it was that much of a struggle, she should get a tutor instead of going to the thing on chapter nights, but she says she isn't going to find a tutor who will come over at midnight (one she's finished with everything) and go over every single homework problem, like they do in the learning center. she even said that if they could find someone like that for her, she would do it, but her EC just acted like she wasn't putting in the effort by finding a tutor who would. i think the problem is that she's one of the only girls with that major, so there isn't anyone else who understands that she needs those sessions. mostly she's getting so upset that she's getting brought up for something beyond her control that she's really doubting her interest in being a member in the first place, because she assumed academics would come first. it's bothering me because she's my younger cousin so i feel a little protective, and she's the only other greek in my family so i wouldn't want her to quit. she's not at danger of being kicked out or anything, i think they would just make her do an extra project or something, but she's upset about being brought up for something like this in the first place and it makes her not very happy with her house... and honestly i've never heard anything like it before.

Your friend needs to talk to her Chapter Advisor, and if necessary, her Executive Headquarters. While sorority is important, one goes to college for an education. If she's not able to keep up with her studies, she'll be on academic probation, which doesn't do anyone any good!

I guess it's a problem with them because it is something she could get out of, since it's not required for the class, but at the same time it is fairly vital for her to go in order to actually PASS the class. the strange thing is, she is very involved with the house and from what i can tell goes to all the other events, so i can't see why they would hold something like that against her. she hasn't said anything (yet) about them wanting to kick her out for not making points or anything like that, but her problem is that she feels hurt about getting brought up at all....it just seems so off-key somehow.

No EC, even if they say they're looking out for her best interest, should dictate what they think she should do as far as sessions and tutors. Unless the EC is board certified as academic advisors, they can't be going around giving her that advice.

She needs to talk to her Chapter Advisor. If the Chapter Advisor supports the current policy, she should immediately contact her HQ's collegiate scholarship coordinator (or whatever her sorority calls it). I'm sure they'd like to know what's going on.
