Somebody Stop Papa Joe!!!!
Quote:
"People only know me as being a gymnast," Carly said. "It's kind of scary."
But Carly's used to difficult dismounts, adept at nailing blind, backward jumps into the unknown.
She hopes people will let her leap from gold medals to gold records with her signature precision and poise.
Carly hasn't hired a voice coach or recorded an album yet, but she's got at least one big name in her corner.
Joe Simpson, father and manager of Richardson-raised pop singers Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, is trying to develop her singing career.

You have got to be kidding.
Although I can see why he picked her. Even if she can't sing, he can make her into a Britney or a Jessica - she's cute, and sometimes that's all that counts.

OK - I'm going to say it and just wait for the flames:
I think Ashlee has actual talent. I don't think she presents herself well in public, but she can actually sing. I was a music major - vocal empasis - in college, and I recognize that she has technique. I believe that it's unfortunate that she's Jessica's sister and gets labeled as "She only made it because her sister did".

Just a quick question: could you please explain how her singing style constitutes good technique, because to the untrained eye (or ear, if you will), it's very hard to believe. To me, it sounds like she drops off the ends of her words and doesn't fully enunciate when she is singing. Half the time I can't understand the lyrics to her songs because of this. I understand people have different musical styles and voices (say, if you were going to compare her and Jessica), but I personally wouldn't call her a "good singer."
I won't even go into the fact that she was outed for lipsynching on national television, because everyone's heard the excuses she gave.

One of her best examples is her vowel modulation to adjust for pitch - she doesn't hold the vowel the same way for low notes as she does for high, keeping her pitch better in tune.
Her voice is flexible - she can quickly switch from pop to belt to middle gospel to soft belt.
She's expressive with her voice, and she varies to create contrast - she doesn't sing the chorus of her song the exact same way every time.
Like I said, she doesn't present herself publicly very well, but she does have talent.

Just because you can change your tone a little doesn't mean you're a good singer. I've been studying music since I was 4. She's still off-key and has a nails-on-chalkboard voice and the personailty of a wet rag. She truly is someone who never would have gotten a second look if it weren't for Jessica and her daddy.

By no means do I think Ashlee's the best singer in the world, but she's successful because she's a good entertainer like it or not. And while she's not for everyone (but who is for everyone anyway), she's obviously doing something right.
On a diff note, I'll be interested to see what Carly sounds like whenever that time comes.

I'm gonna agree with AlphaFrog.... I like Ashlee. Yes, she goofs up, and yes she's not the greatest singer in the world. But she's also not a Mariah that you can't even sing along to b/c the pitch is so high. You can have fun with Ashlee's music. And that's why I like her.

What kind of music do you listen to? Because I hear that kind of stuff all the time.
And everyone lip synchs sometimes. Ok maybe not on SNL, but it happens. Get over it.

At the same time, she (and her sister) sing from their throat rather than their diaphragm. It's going to create a lot of problems for her when she's older.
I did vocal training for 10 years. I'm not disagreeing with you. She has some good vocal characteristics but she does the biggest singing no-no.

I agree with what you said. I am by no means a vocal expert, but I did choir for years and our director was always harping on that--but I can understand why.

?Yeah, I heard this can really mess people up. Do you know what that actually does to the throat?

I'm sure that's what gave the the nodules that she claimed caused her to lip sync. Singing from the throat doesn't ruin your sound, but it will ruin your voice eventually.
I have a vocal professor that keeps telling me that Madonna's career was extended 10 years because of her professional training for Evita. If she would have continued as she was, she would have ruined her voice in another year or so.
