The OSU chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha had invited fraternity members from other colleges to attend an invitation-only dance at the student union.
Mr. Harrison had met Ms. Thomas at the student dance, and she had given him her phone number, police said. He and a friend went to the Holiday Inn, where dozens of people were attending the fraternity's after-dance party in a hotel suite, in hopes of seeing her again.
Karras Mitchell Harrison was being held Monday on suspicion of murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested Sunday. A second man was arrested Monday.
Mr. Harrison and his friend became enraged after they were denied entry into the suite, Lt. Metcalf said. The friend, "who is known to carry a gun, pulled it out of his waistband, handed it to the other guy, and he started to shoot," the lieutenant said.
The shooter fired wildly at least six times into the crowd.
Mr. Shanor was struck in the liver and kidneys.
