No grades, no paperwork: good bye at San Marcos

A fraternity gets banned
Members of Tau Kappa Epsilon (at Cal State San Marcos) have learned about those hurdles the hard way in the last year. The 50-member fraternity lost its university recognition in spring 2005 for failing to meet the 2.23 minimum grade-point average and for not completing some paperwork, according to President Erik Groset.
"It's hurt us because we can't have a table on campus to recruit students, but it's helped us because we've become more proactive about finding new members," he said. "We go out now and make more personal connections with people."
James Koutrolis, another member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, said the university has become less open to new fraternities in recent years because of the stereotypes.
"From talking to a lot of the faculty, this school is more oriented toward academics," said Koutrolis. "They don't want the party school Cal State image. They want to be viewed more like a serious school, like a University of California campus."
