What Do They Do with It?

I've wondered about this for years and thought some GCers must know:

What do stores do with all of those Christmas / holiday "specially packaged" items that aren't sold? You know, the perfume/lotion sets, the aftershave / deodorant sets, the wallet/keychain sets, the special packs of socks and underwear, and so on?

A lot of that stuff just sits there, even through the after-Christmas sales, so what eventually happens to it?

At the store where I'm working we break up the gift sets and sell the items individually.

Companies such as Clinique and Lancome sell these unsold promotional sets and their "gift with purchase" to outlet stores who in turn sell them at a great bargain. Instead of buying an item you don't need just to get the bag full of goodies, you can just buy the bag of goodies!
