Things you were afraid of as a child?

What were some of you guys scared of as little kids?

I was horrified of crabs for years when one of ours escaped from its tank and found its way to my bed.

I was afraid of tornados and R2D2. I'm no longer afraid of either of them.

Whenever the opening credits of television show "Hawai'i 5-0" came on, I would run out of the room because they showed a wave and I thought it was going to come out of the television set and get me.

I'm not kidding, I was terrified.

Hmmmm let's see...

Lightning
Tornadoes
Spiders, bugs, etc
Heights
Dark
Scary movies
Haunted Houses
Big dogs (dobermans, rottweilers, german shepherds, etc)
Being home alone at night
Suffocating/drowning
ETA: Fires (Thanks AGDee!)

There are probably others I have forgotten-- but that list will do-- it makes me look like a big enough chicken already!!!!!!!!! Other than a lessened fear of heights-- I still have a fear of all of the above!!

YES--I am still afraid of the dark!!!! I have a good reason to be though--since 3 of my grandparents have passed away, my sisters have had many an encounter with their ghosts. I am unsure of why I have not seen them, but I sleep with the hall light on just to make sure I do not see them at night in the dark!!!!!!!! I would love to see them in the daytime though!!!!!

fire and tornados were my two. I would begin screaming uncontrollably if I even saw an insurance ad on TV with a house on fire. I had recurrent tornado dreams up until I was 25 or so.

I absolutely could not and still cannot sleep in a room with an open door - regular door or closet door. My great-uncle was a fire chief, and really stressed the importance of a shut door during a fire.

I was also afraid of large dogs (except German Shepherds & Samoyeds), and am only now getting over it.

Except collies....

- The witch from Sleeping Beauty, I use to have my mom fast forward the parts that she was in.
- Overpasses...I hated walking over them especially when there was a highway or major road under it, I use to think that the bridge would collapse and I'd get run over.

Why would you be afraid of seeing your grandparents in the dark? All of mine are still alive but I remember my great grand parents and would really like to be able to see them again under any circumstances. (They were seriously cool!)
When I was very small we were visiting my paternal Great-Grandparents in New Orleans and their house (circa 1833) used to spook me a bit. I asked my GGM what were those things I kept seeing out of the corner of my eye but could never get a clear view of? She saw I was concerned and chuckled as she explained, "But why does this trouble you, at best it is my grandfather, and at worst it is a close cousin." So I replied (much relieved) "Ah, then that's allright, they are all family!" After that I was never troubled by things half seen and sounds half heard at that great old house. As an OBTW, I hope it came through the storm OK. I'd hate to think the family ghosts would get turfed out by bad weather. And no, this is not a joke but one of my favorite memories of times and places quickly slipping away.

1. Being possessed. I saw The Exorcist when I was 5 b/c my teenage sisters were my babysitters (terrible ones at that) & they let me sit w/them & watch it. I was deathly afraid that this would happen to someone I knew.

2. Things in the dark. Normal objects in my room became terrifying in the dark.

3. La Mano Peluda. This is an old Mexican tale told to children about a severed hand that pulls naughty children out of their beds & yanks them straight down into hell. My brother once put his hand in the freezer & then snuck into my room & pulled my feet. I screamed until I passed out. When I woke up, my mom had me in her bed & my brother was being yelled at by my older sisters after my mom gave him a spanking. I was 6 when this happened.

4. Being buried alive after seeing a movie w/Jennifer Jason Leigh about it. Scared the crap out of me.

5. Drowning

6. Being burned to death

7. Policemen. I seriously don't know why I was so afraid of them. I would run into the house & hide under the bed if I saw one going down our street. I'd cry too until someone came out to get me. Of course now, I'm marrying one.
