New MSC at HQ

Saw this on the National website:

10/5/2005 - Maggie McFarlin Welcomed as New Member Services Coordinator

Maggie McFarlin has joined the staff at Fraternity Headquarters as the new Member Services Coordinator for the Southeast Territory (MSC-Southeast). Maggie graduated from Tulane University with a double major in sociology and environmental geosciences. Maggie is a member of Pi Beta Phi, and during college she served her fraternity for three years in leadership positions, including chapter president. After graduation, Maggie traveled through China and volunteered for the Thailand Tsunami Relief efforts for two months.

As the new MSC-Southeast/Volunteer Support, Maggie will assist Elysia Gallivan, Assistant Executive Director for the Southeast, coordinate chapter accreditation information, update membership status and records, prepare and process billing, process reinstatements, suspensions, and all chapter records. In addition, she will process petitions for alumna membership and provide support to alumnae associations in the southeastern states.

Maggie will also focus on volunteer support, providing support to the Fraternity’s volunteers, assisting in identifying, recruiting, training and retaining volunteers. She will maintain a database of national volunteers and potential volunteers. Maggie will serve as the staff liaison for NPC Delegation, National Ritual Chair, and the National Music Chair. Welcome Maggie!

------

I want to preface this post by saying that I fully respect HQ's decision to hire Maggie and am neither questioning anyone nor intend this post to be a flame. I'm just curious to see other opinions on this topic. Perhaps I'm a bit naive, but I guess I always assumed that the people working at HQ would only be AXiDs. Am I the only one who thought that?

Discuss.

I wonder how Maggie is going to help volunteers and "train and retrain" them if she isn't an AXiD. I don't know the reasons behind the hiring but it seems odd to have a non sister working for HQ.

Actually, there were quite a few from FHQ who weren't AZD's. You see many of them initiate at Convention. Phi Mu's and ADII (I think it's ADII) HQ are in Atlanta and they post jobs on the regular sites just like everyone else. I know not everyone who works at those is not a sister.

The new MSC might actually be able to give some advice from a different standpoint. We are so used to hearing the same thing, maybe it will be good to have a new voice.

So is Kathyrn gone then? There was no annoucement that she was leaving and I have to email her quite often.

My question is how can Maggie be National Ritual Chiar if she's not an AXiD. That seems to me to ruin the whole idea of rituals if non-AXiDs know about them.

There have been several people who are not Alpha Xis to work at headquarters.

The current operations manager is a man. Our current Executive Director was initiated as an Alumnae Initiate after she was hired. Several years ago, the Assistant Executive director was an Alpha Gamma Delta.

I guess its good to have a different viewpoint and different experience in how to do things.

I will admit I raised my eyebrows and was skeptical of the ritual portion, but FHQ leadership knows what they need, I guess.

Yes, Kathryn left about two weeks ago or so. She was very helpful, and I did correspond with her quite a bit.

I'm also skeptical about the ritual aspect of her job. I would like more information about that part of her job before I get upset. Overall, it could be a great idea to have someone from a different GLO... change is not bad She'll love working with Elysia (she's from my chapter... a year younger)!

I don't know how Ifeel about this... I was definitely a little suprised by the announcement on the national website. Wasn't there a qualified Alpha Xi Delta for the job? It is NOT cool if she gets to find out any ritual-related stuff, in my opinion.

Y'all are gonna think I'm being catty, but I bet the reason they hired a non-azd is because they've been short on MSCs for a while now, and the fact that someone just left didnt make matters any easier. They are probably getting desperate.

Pardon my crash...(especially in this circumstance, LOL)

but the way I read that, she is the staff liason to the ritual chair, not the actual ritual chair. More like if the chapters she is in charge of have questions for the ritual chair she asks them - which wouldn't necessarily entail her knowing anything about ritual. You can say "Alpha Beta needs 10 ritual books" without knowing what is in the ritual book.

We had an AXO in charge of the ASA foundation for a while - so yes, lots of HQs do it.

33girl... thanks for crashing and giving us another way to look at the issue! I have a feeling your perspective is probably pretty accurate as to how this will be handled.

This is rather ironic, but I just found out my big sister has been hired to work at ADPi's HQ for their Foundation. So, another example a person from a different greek org working at a HQ.

FHQ has, in fact lost 2 MSCs in the past two months. Kathryn moved away from Indianapolis and Erin got transferred to the Foundation. The other MSC job posting is currently on the website.

While I also find it odd that a non-AXiD would work at headquarters, it isn't as though our confidential things are all over the building. There are a million other non-secret things that she will be busy doing.

I think that they have had a shortage of applications for these positions...the only thing I can think of is for those of us to volunteer to encourage our seniors to apply! Often MSCs are women who applied to be ELCs and didn't get that position and then applied for MSC.

There have been several women (and men) at FHQ who were not initiated when they began work. I believe Kathryn was initiated as an alumnae and I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that Lori was initiated at Convention a few years back.

Of course, I'd rather see it all be AXiDs but if we don't apply they have to fill the positions somehow!

Hi, just a comment on the Alpha Gam side!

Our Executive Director is a Kappa Alpha Theta who is wonderful and has been very helpful when I've need her!

Our Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation is headed by a terrific guy named Gale!

Sorry I don't know where your HQ is but our's is in Indianapolis so maybe everyone plays fruit basket turn over every few years to keep creative juices flowing!
