Knitting Needles on Planes

Hi guys, I'm going on vacation to the Dominican Republic in a few days and I wanted to take my knitting with me so that I could work on it while I was in the airplane and at the airport and stuff like that. Someone told me that knitting needles aren't allowed on planes in your carry-on, and someone else told me that they are. I tried searching for this information online and I can't find it. Does anyone know if knitting needles are, in fact, allowed on planes?

Also, be carefull about the scissors you take with you.... some are allowed and some aren't.

Might be a good idea to get the plastic needles, I sat by a lady once who said they would give her a hard time with her regular knitting needles and so she just went out and bought the plastic kind.

I went to the DR in March.

I would suggest taking the plastic needles, and do watch the sissors. They took my tiny sissors I use for cross stiching, and gave some old lady a hard time with her regular needles.

When in doubt, call your carrier. Or the TSA website.

I also recommend printing the TSA guide and carrying it with you - with written proof of the policy, they can't mess with you. Though they do have the catch-all provision of denying you entry to the 'sterile' area. Catch-22.

Where can you find plastic needles? It seems like such an easy thing to find and yet every store I go to seems to be sold out of them. I found bamboo needles somewhere, but they were really expensive.

You shouldn't have any problem. I've take bamboo, steel, and aluminum needles as carry-on several times. Just don't take any scissors, no matter how tiny. Get one of those round yarn cutters with the covered blade. Also second the idea of carrying the TSA regs with you, I always do. Happy knitting! (FWIW I think plastic needles feel like crap, invest in the bamboo)

Ditto on the no scissors policy. I once used my work bag as a carry on, and didn't think to take out the OR scissors or hemostats that I had in my bag( I don't know where my head was that day)-security had a fit, but luckily my stethoscope was in the bag too, so they saw that I might actually not be a terrorist, and these might actually be job tools.

Only if the aircraft transponder is 'squawking' code 7500 - if the situation escalates to an emergency, then the transponder is set to 'squawk' 7700. There are other ways to covertly signal a hijacking situation to air traffic control and to police on the ground, but I'm not at liberty to discuss them.

BTW Jadey was just hijacking the thread,, anyway...
