Berkeley: More Alcohol-Related Problems (Car Crash)

More alcohol-related problems for Berkeley Greeks?
Excerpt from today's Daily Californian:

A UC Berkeley student is in critical condition after she was hit by a Jeep while waiting at a bus stop . . . .
Eighteen-year-old UC Berkeley freshman and Cal water polo player Christopher Talbott was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence in connection with the crash.

. . . [A witness saw] four or five people jump out of the car and run in opposite directions. The driver stayed at the scene. The passengers have yet to be identified, according to a police statement.
...police said they found several open containers of alcohol in the vehicle. They gave Talbott a field sobriety test at the scene, and arrested him for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, driving with an open container, and possession of a false ID . . . .

Police later confirmed that the Jeep was coming from a “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”-themed party at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Police said Talbott had driven to the residence halls to pick up some female students and was on his way back to the party at the time of the accident. . . .

There was already talk (even before this incident) of a potential moratorium on Greek alcohol-related events this fall. The adminstration imposed a similar moratorium a few years back and it really didn't lead to any changes in behavior.

Currently, Panhellenic and IFC are asking for a meeting with the adminstration before any decisions are made. I'm not sure if there are any Cal Greeks on here (they usually hear information more quickly than us advisers!)

well,
glad the high school kid who doesn't have a flippin clue what Fraternities REALLY are about got to put his two dumbass cents in. I hope the houses on that campus took note of his name and don't pledge him...he'll just end up being another waste of space that takes away from people who get more out of and give more to the greek sytem for better things and better reasons. Someone should tell him and his buddies like him that Animal House was a MOVIE!!!

And it worked so well when Washington State University tried this a few years ago.
