Has anyone went to a Mardi Gras mixer? How did you dress up, and what kind of things/decorations/whatever did you do? Besides beads. Sorry, I'm a new social chair! Thanks!

Well I'm from New Orleans and AOII had a Mardi Gras swap a few years ago.
1. Mardi Gras Masks
2. Mardi Gras colors are purple, green & gold
3. Umbrellas to "second line" around the room
4. Good Jazz Music
5. Mardi Gras Beads
6. King Cakes to eat (Randazzo's has the best, website below)

You could also have a Mardi Gras Ball and have a court with a King and Queen and debutauntes and then everyone else is a guest of the ball....

Mardi Gras isn't until Feb. 28, and as far as I'm concerned, it'll go on, taste or not.

I'm from New Orleans, and don't think it's in bad taste. In fact, I welcome it. Keeps our minds off the dull and dismal.

New Orleans plans to have a scaled down Mardi Gras party as usual, so why not play follow the leader?

We're having Mardi Gras and that's final
Tuesday, December 13, 2005
Chris Rose

The Mardi Gras thing. It's not on the table. It's not a point of negotiation or a bargaining chip.

We're going to have it and that's that. End of discussion.

Folks in faraway places are going to feel the misery of missing it, and that is a terrible thing. In the past, I have missed the season a couple of times because of story assignments elsewhere, and it sucked to be away from the center of the universe and not be a part of this city's fundamental, quintessential and indelible cultural landmark.

But we can't turn off the lights and keep the costumes in storage and ladders in the shed for another year just because we are beaten and broken and because so many of us are not here.

In fact, we have to do this because we are beaten and broken and so many of us are not here.

...

Fly the flag. Be in that number. This is our battle to win or lose. Hopefully, of one mind and one message. That we are still here. And that we are still New Orleans.
Follow link for the complete story.

No, they could maybe even make it a find raiser for the victims or something ($5 donation at the door...)

On a side note, Mr. AOIIBrandi and myself are hoping to go to N.O. for Mardi Gras. It will be a little like last ones out, first ones back in since we were there on Sunday (praying we would get out on Air Tran's last flight) when the storm hit on Monday.

Not tasteless at all. I thought New Orleans was still going to have their celebration??

Besides, they are not going to cancel it in Venice, Brazil, the south of France and other hot Mardi Gras spots. If you learn the history of the event, you might see the situation differently.

We had a Mardi Gras date party last year and we had the girls make or decorate a mask for their dates (if they wanted to), had beads, we also had a black tarp that we hung on the wall and had the girls and their dates sign it in gold, purple, and green metallic markers. Have a good DJ (ours was from a local radio station), and we also had some different colored lights.

We had a Mardi Gras party during September 2005 to raise money for the Red Cross.
Beads are really cheap, and can be bought online in bulk for very little money. This place has fast turnaround and great prices.

We had beer and hurricanes, (pineapple juice, grapefruit juice, genadine and rum) muffellettas (hoagies or subs on a round roll, with black-olive spread and olive oil instead of mayo). Got some zydeco CDs cheap at a local CD store (you can probably download some good zydeco) for atmosphere, and everything was in Mardi-Gras colors of gold, green and purple.

Our friends had a great time, and we raised $1500 for hurricane relief.
