Greatest Athlete Today
I'm voting for Lance Armstrong. He dominates his sport, and I'm particularly impressed that he overcame cancer.

I agree he's an inspiration. I just really hope those illegal supplement allegations are false. Regardless, he has to be one of the best physically conditioned people on the planet.

Lance Armstrong is unbelievable. I'd also say Michael Vick, Barry Bonds and Marion Jones deserve mention (Jones and Barry depending on the allegations against them).
What Lance does though is just above and beyond.

This week just about anyone would vote for Armstrong.
Depending on what criteria (as opposed to criterium -- bad joke) is used, though, that could change from week to week.
I suspect that the real "greatest" athlete in the world is the best Decathalete in the world -- the next of whom will be crowned in Athens later this year.

I would also say that Michelle Akers is one heck of a forward...

This week is what got me thinking about this, but I would probably give the same answer in 6 months. I believe that Lance Armstrong dominates his sport more than any other athlete today.
I believe that he is in the rarified strata of truly dominant athletes. Like Muhammad Ali and Wayne Gretzky in their prime.

I'd have to say for Athlete it would be for someone who is the best athletically overall, not just dominating in their one sport. One that can go to any sport and excel. Therefore anyone that puts lazy bonds on their list knows nothing of sports...

I think that the Olympic Games might help determine who the greatest athlete is. I am always impressed with the track and field athletes.
I haven't heard any accusations against Lance Armstrong using steroids. I watched his interview with Charlie Rose, and they discussed that perhaps the chemotherapy and other drugs used to treat his cancer made him stronger and improved his endurance as an unexpected side effect. He is an amazing athlete.

I also think Lance Armstrong but i also think the Williams sisters dominate the world of tennis and are on top of their game,

I would put it on Armstrong because the claims are nothing. The rest like Jones...well "some of these girls take so much juice they can't get erections anymore".

Absolutely...there's just no one on the Tour that can really match him right now, it's pretty ridiculous. His closest competition is Ulrich, and he's even said he's getting to the point where he just can't catch up.
This guy is truly history-making, and I'm hoping people appreciate just what they're seeing out of him.

i disagree - venus mailed it in at wimbledon, even 'forgetting' to correct a scoring mistake in which they served out of the ad court three points in a row. her reason? "i don't like confrontation."
Right.
The Williams sisters have gone tiger - prone to taking days off, b/c really there's not much more to accomplish, and other factors have stepped in.
Lance armstrong really is the most dominant athlete in today's sports world. The EPO rumors, if true, would definitely take this away - the added oxygen boosting in the blood would be way more important to a cyclist than, say, steroids to a Barry Bonds. However, w/out any real proof of use during these six seasons . . . I think you have to consider this one of the tier-one sporting accomplishments of our generation. It might be the top.
He even looks to be getting stronger, stretching to almost 4 min yesterday. Unreal.

I'm the biggest brady fan on the West Coast, and I honestly disagree with this. Tom has good physical ability and has the greatest mental attitude towards the gane, but he's more of the product of the system in my opinion. I think Brady needs Belichek more than Bill needs him, it just happened to be a perfect match.
He still is, though, a two time Super Bowl Most Valuable Playa, so it's all good.
And, I'm still in the middle about whether Michelle Akers or Mia Hamm was/is better.
