Female Faculty Advisors?

Ok here is my dumb alumni question, the faculty advisor for the Phi Tau Chapter is leaving to move to another college, he has given me the name of another interested highly qualified PhD professor that is apparently local and well liked by alot of students, however she is a lady.

Can our chapters have women professors for their ACADEMIC advisor (not High Pi)??? Obviously we have women staff members at HQ, and many chapters used to have House Moms?

LCA greek chatters, what is the answer, I have no freaking clue

If she's qualified and dedicated why not? After she would be an advisor not a Brother... the meetings are open, the AM ceremony is open... all that she would not be party to would be ritual - now would that affect her roll as an advisor? Finally who knows - maybe a femine influence might be benefical now that house mothers are pretty much a thing of the past...

A reservation

I would have a reservation regarding a woman as a faculty advisor. If she would, at some time, want to witness some of our closed activities, we would have to decline. If she was adamant that we could not proceed without her agreement then we would be dead in the water.

I am not suggesting that she would do so, but the possibility exists. I am less trusting of university administrators than some alumni, but that is based upon my dealings with them over the span of 25+ years.

The UIW colony has not one, but TWO female Faculty Advisors. They both rock and one views the guys in the colony as 'her boys'. She'll go to bat for them ANYTIME.

Its worked out great for the UIW brothers.

Exclamation

This is an interesting question to be sure!

But, I for one agree with JohnG on this.

It is called different agendas among Genders! (Plumbing for the New Kids)

I was on the Phone with The Last H A at Zeta asking about the GreekLife Rep. of the College (U) about Her, an ADPI, and She is doing nothing to promote Greek Life on Campus!

Not to be a Male Pig to Females, but what do they know about Fraternitys?

Granted, they may help keep Asswhole Brothers in line some waht, but not to aid in running Our Functions, Ideals,, Exec Meetings.

They are not House Moms for sure, where do their Loyaltys lay, Adm. of Zeta?

Very Touchy for sure.

I spoke with this lady today and I was really shocked, she had been to LCA.org and memorized all key info and statistics about LCA international. 15 year Phd and professor at college as well. Has already planned a luncheon with our High Zeta officers and wants to look at how she gets along with officers.

Seems willing to help out with students grades and academics as well.

She sold me on it!

Jas, there is always the exception to the rule.

I for one have never been against Changes.

Hell, I fought George S. about Pledge and New Associates in 1966!

He Won, thank goodness!

Kevin, that is True. All of our Facaluty Advisors have Been Male
but had to prove that they were interested enough to stay involved, not just in name only to be Initiated. One Head the ROTC Dept was an Advisor but was not Initiated. We try to be as selective as a N A!

We now have one # 599 who us Chair of the Dept. and now has a Brother who is His Son!

I think female advisors (academic or otherwise) are just fine.
Just like males, if they are willing to get involved, go for it.
The official advisor for our Phi Tau chapter is also female.

re: Tom (Male Pig to Women comment).....
I don't know about your chapter, but at mine when I was
active, you walk into our house at any given time and there
were often 2 gals for every guy there (why do you think I
joined?? ). I think some girls know just as much about
fraternities as do some frat. members....at least they're
THERE and INVOLVED more than some of the members.

Of course, that was the "good ole days"....now we have to
be afraid of lawsuits like the one that made Jaycees go co-ed,
so aren't anywhere near as many chicks at the house anymore.

Life goes on!

Exactly education and character are not beholden to sex... God-dammit I'm pretty sure my ex or my sister know more than 2/3rds of the actives about the Fraternity and chapter... or at least I saw as much tonight at a wedding where my sister and a alumn from the early 70s lectured a new alumn on chapter and Fraternity history... it should all come down to character, dedication, and commitment... not whether they are male or female....

From from being a Male Pig, at almost 63, I could care less, plumbing dont work that well anymore anyway!

If Women cannot attend and undersatand certain functions of the Zetas then not sure they can be that good as advisors.

We as a Local Broke the rule of House Mothers and to me, the quality of understanding, manners and many other things have gone by the way side to teach young Men to be Men.

Granted, there is and needs to be a niche for Women, I still am not sure if they can fully funtion as Advisors for a Male GLO!

Wink

Yes, Kevin, I a, am well aware that wome have the right to vote, and the rest has been down hill ever since!!!!!

Okay, maybe a play on wording?

How is there a difference depending on what is expected of them in thier position. Still trying to figure that out! Advise from a Greek Life point of view or Being an Advisor? Advisor who participates in or all Chapter Functions if so desire?

Is symatics playing a role here?

Yea, some do confuse "chapter advisor" with "High Pi".
A chapter advisor could be almost anyone willing to get
involved, including women, advising in a particular area
(academics, finances, etc).

but the High Pi is a whole different critter! He MUST
be an initiated brother first of all. Secondly, he is
officially APPOINTED by the GHZ and officialy represents
the general fraternity at the chapter level (though
nominations from the chapter are generally accepted).

But a High Pi, technically, carries the authority of the GHZ
for that chapter.

I've heard of a chapter, to remain anonymous, where the
officers were do-nothings. Miraculously a very active set
of AM's were recruited and initiated, but were very
frustrated about the officers not getting anything done.
They talked to the High Pi about it.

About a week later at chapter meeting, the High Pi announces
(to EVERYONE's surprise, including the officers) that all
current officers are resigning and that elections for all
offices will be held next week (or 2).

Of course the current officers weren't happy, and even
called HQ to ask to "do something about this dicatator".
But the High Pi had done his homework and had already
contacted HQ before the "big announcement"....so there
was nothing the current officers could do....but run for
election again.

New officers were elected and everything turned out great.

Needless to say, such decisions wouldn't be made by a
non-member advisor, female or otherwise.

my 2cc
Kevin
