Unhappy Letting Go of Your Advisor

OK, I'm not in a sorority (yet!), but as an interest group we had to ask a faculty member to be our advisor. At first we thought she'd the perfect woman to ask because she is the director of the Multicultural Center here, and she'd be able to help us find new interests. She accepted, but made it seem as if we'd be a burden on her. We have to write letters for her to sign. We basically have to be in charge of ourselvses, and she's our advisor on paper. She is in charge of at least 17 different organizations on campus!

She is truly an amazing woman, but we don't feel as if she can really be able to give her energy to us as a sorority that is newly expanding on our campus.

We are thinking about letting her go, and asking another faculty that we know well to be our advisor instead of her. Problem is, I don't want to be rude and just let her go (although I don't think she'd care).

What do you guys think?

Most faculty are way overloaded with responsibilities and then they are asked to advise student orgs. Most of them love their students so much that they won't say no. Maybe you could have a team of advisors. That way you won't have to feel bad about letting your advisor go, but at the same time it will lighten the burden. It may even prove more productive to have additional insights.

I ended up asking the woman who I wanted to be our advisor if she was interested, and she agreed. She explained that our first advisor was tired of being stuck with everything multicultural, which kinda defeats the purpose of multiculturalism. Anyway, we got it all straightened out, and are moving forward with our colonization!
