Wink Silly question

Ok all, I have a question, and the answer may be kind of obvious, so bear with me on this: Say Suzy PNM is about to go through rush, and she's gotten all her recs sent in.Suzy is a legacy to one of the sororities through her mom. Now, would she still need a rec for that sorority, or does mom's membership make it enough? Reading all the rush threads got me curious about this. Thanks!

Usually Susy's Mom will send in a rec for her daughter indicating the legacy relationship. In many cases, if mom doesn't send in the rec, the chapter won't know of the legacy relationship.

I believe we have a special legacy form that members complete. As was said already, the chapter isn't going to know about the legacy part unless someone tells them.

i think in most cases when you register for rush there are questions on the forms regarding legacy information and panhellenic takes it from there. in my case and in the majority of our legacies' cases, moms, sisters and grandmas sent in unsolicited recommendations as a pre-emptive strike.

I'd also tell Suzy PNM to mention she's a legacy to the girl rushing her at the chapter of Mom's sorority. My sophmore year roomate was a legacy to ABC through her biological sister. During rush she was cut from that house.I woke up to her and sister arguing over this in the middle of the night. From what I could tell, I guess local chapter of ABC told bio sister that due to the high number of rushees, the roomie was supposed to have said something to the rusher. It was a mess.

An Alpha Delta Pi legacy is recognized with a legacy introduction form sent in by the sorority woman to whom she is a legacy. The legacy may also have recommendations sent in on her behalf. (I don't know what you do in the case that the sorority woman you are a legacy to is deceased, but you are a legacy nonetheless and legacy intro form can still be filled out).

A PNM who chooses not to recognize her legacy status, for fear that chapters will be biased and think that she only wants to go to her legacy chapter, is cutting off her nose to spite her face. Any form of recommendation or recognition helps improve a PNM's chances in recruitment. And any chapter that would cut you based on your relative's choice to join XYZ 20 years ago and perceiving that you will want that too "just because you are a legacy" is not a chapter you probably would want to join anyway. It shows they are making snap judgements without even meeting the PNM and giving her and the chapter a chance to see if there is a good match. I think PNM's should use any resources possible if they want to have a successful recruitment (recs, legacy forms where applicable, talking to their recruitment counselors and the office of greek life with any questions about recruitment, practicing interview questions, etc.)

Good luck to all the PNM's going through recruitment this fall!

Is this done? Where a PNM would not use being a legacy to her advantage? From the very addicitng rush threads posted here, it seems that all the girls work hard for their recs, and being a legacy is a nice break for them( and by break, I mean, they don't have to work hard at finding someone to write a rec for them).

Another silly question along these lines:

Some sororities require that recs be written by alums. Suppose a PNM is a legacy because of her sister, who is still an active somewhere? Would she need a legacy introduction from her sister and a separate rec from an alum?

A friend of mine is an ADPi legacy through her grandmother, who is deceased. I wrote her a rec and included this information in it.

The PNM may not like her legacy chapter at that particular school, or may want to do it "on her own" (i.e. be chosen because of her, not because of her mother). She can still get a rec, but she doesn't have to put down she's a legacy if she doesn't want to. It's her prerogative.

I would guess when chapters cut based on things like someone being a legacy to another group, it's because they have a huge amount of rushees and HAVE to make cuts and are looking for something, or because the PNM has told them straight out that she's pledging her legacy group.

While I can't speak for the other NPC's, in ADPi, an alum may write a rec or a collegian in good standing may write a rec. **The collegian must not attend the same university as the PNM is rushing. (That is, as an ADPi collegian, you can't submit a recommendation to your own chapter. But if your younger sister is a PNM at your school, then yes, you do submit a Legacy Introduction for her.)

I think a recommendation and a legacy introduction both carry considerable weight; you have been formally endorsed by a member. They are different forms, but both serve to represent a PNM favorably. I'd advise any PNM, legacy or no, to secure recommendations. I don't think it is wise, though, to have multiple recs to one sorority when they are all from information-only sources (ie: secured through Alum Panhellenics, you don't know the recommender and they are providing info-only endorsements).

Again, each NPC sorority has their own policies regarding recs and legacies.
